Alicia Diaz is a rum-maker and member of the Diaz family, founders and former owners of the Don Rumbotico distillery in Havana. The family specialized in producing small batch, barrel-aged rum, and their recipe remains a family secret. When an anonymous financial group offered to buy the distillery, her family initially refused. However, the distillery burned down in a suspected arson, and they, left with nothing, were forced to set it for a fraction of its value.
Alicia was interviewed by the Havana Sun about the selling of the distillery and her family legacy. She indicated to the newspaper that she felt current recipe inferior and feared that recent changes in Havana meant that the city was losing its cultural legacy.[1]
