Ana’s rifle shoots darts that can restore health to her allies or deal ongoing damage to her enemies. She can use the rifle’s scope to zoom in on targets and make highly accurate shots. While Ana does relatively less damage compared to other snipers, the Biotic Rifle allows Ana to switch back and forth from the roles of combatant to healer.

    Strategy

Ana is a mid to long-range Support sniper, capable of healing at any range while also maintaining a fair level of damage output. Her Biotic Grenade lets her amplify healing effects from not only her own healing darts but also from other Supports and environmental healing, such as Payloads and Health packs. She has a sidearm which will fire a Sleep Dart, which can render the enemy who's hit with it temporary useless unless someone wakes them up. Nano Boost is a supportive ultimate that is used to provide strong buffs to an ally, allowing them to deal more damage while taking less damage from the enemy. She can also be an anti-healer as her Biotic Grenade will prevent enemies hit by the blast from getting healed in any way, making her an outstanding support. Ana lacks all source of mobility and only has her sidearm to protect herself, making it easy for her to be outflanked by the flankers as well as other mobile heroes.

    Weapons & Abilities

    • Biotic Rifle : Ana's primary weapon. It carries ten rounds in a single clip and is able to affect both teams, healing allies for 75 HP and dealing 80 damage to enemies. It comes equipped with a scope which increases Ana's range at the sacrifice of vision of her surroundings. The rounds fired from the Biotic Rifle change behavior depending on the use of the scope. While unscoped, the darts are considered fast-moving projectiles. While scoped, the darts are considered hitscan.
      • Ana's rifle is unique in that it deals its damage and heals in rapid segments, rather than all at once. As it deals 4 rapid segment within 1 shot, it is less effective against armored-heroes.
      • The healing segments will continue to heal shortly after a teammate gets shot, allowing for one to fire in anticipation to damage and still heal.
      • Even though it is a sniper-rifle weapon, it can't deal a critical shot.
    • Sleep Dart : Ana's sidearm. It is her personal anti-flanker tool. Firing a single projectile that travels at high speeds, it will inflict the Sleep status effect on an enemy. While asleep, one cannot move, attack, or use abilities, and audio will sound lower-pitched and distorted. The effect lasts for five and a half seconds, but can be cut short by any amount of damage.
      • Sleep Dart deals very little damage to the target.
      • Sleep Dart is excellent at mitigating channeled ultimate abilities such as Genji's Dragonblade or Soldier: 76's Tactical Visor, and can make the work of large, mobile tanks who often attack snipers much harder.
      • Ana must be in constant communication with her allies to get the most out of Sleep Dart. Any amount of damage, whether it be a stray bullet or an explosion, is enough to rouse one who is under Sleep Dart's effects.
    • Biotic Grenade : The Biotic Grenade will heal reasonable health upon being cast, and during its four seconds of duration will increase the healing rate of any allies hit by the grenade by 50%. Meanwhile, the enemies hit by the grenade will be damaged and unable to receive healing for duration completely.
      • The grenade is the only way for Ana to heal herself outside of health packs.
      • The Biotic Grenade is a fantastic tool for healing heroes with large health pools. Under the increased healing, a critically injured tank will only require a few darts to get back into the fight.
      • The grenade also serves well as an emergency burst heal for both allies and Ana herself, should an enemy flank them.
      • The blast radius of the grenade is fairly small, so one should throw the grenade directly onto teammates as opposed to near them.
      • Biotic Grenade is a strong ability to use in team fight, throwing directly to a group of enemies and allies alike will dramatically gain an upper hand.
    • Nano Boost (Ultimate): Ana's Ultimate ability. Ana will temporarily embolden an ally, giving them 50% increased damage and immunity to 50% of all incoming damage for 8 seconds before it expires.
      • Nano Boost can't be missed; It does ignores Genji's Deflect and D.Va's Defense Matrix.
      • While under Nano Boost's effect, one's character model will glow either red or blue depending on affiliation to Ana.
      • Nano Boost has the potential to make already deadly ultimate abilities even stronger, especially channeled ones such as Soldier: 76's Tactical Visor or Genji's Dragonblade.

    General Strategies

    • While Ana has reasonable to outstanding damage capabilities like other damage dealers, she is unable to deal any critical shots and suffers from low mobility. You must focus on healing your allies rather than playing like DPS-heroes; you can't act like them well on your own.
    • Even Ana can provide more healing than other supports due to her fast fire-rate and Biotic Grenade. Playing her as a sole support will lead the enemy to prioritize you as the first target. So pairing with the other supports should be recommended.
    • Ana is a sniper class, which is deadly at attacking the enemy from extreme range. You can kite the enemy that your teammates can't attack back like rivaled snipers or airborne targets with ease. Keep in mind that you can't deal a critical shot nor heavy damage that will put them in lethal levels instantly, so try to stay in cover or a friendly's barrier.
    • Biotic Grenade is a strong counter to all healing effects; such as Roadhog's Take a Breather, Zenyatta's Transcendence or even an opposing Ana's Biotic Grenade. You can throw the grenade directly to the enemy and contact your teammates to gang up on the effected target as they can't be healed.
    • Missing a Sleep Dart to flankers will result in your disadvantage. Try to practice your aim and adjusting the dart's speed.
    • Ana has a combo on her own with Sleep Dart. If you can hit the enemy with Sleep Dart, shoot the enemy with dart and throw a Biotic Grenade and then melee attack. Even if the enemy survives, you will have an upper hand in any subsequent match.
    • A target under the effect from Sleep Dart will be rendered useless and unable to make any actions. If your combo can't finish the target, communicate your team to do so. Reinhardt's Charge is a great choice to finish the target if he doesn't need to cover your team with barrier at that time.
    • Don't let the other teammates interfere in your line-of-sight while activating Nano Boost on the target. You have to communicate with your teammates to whom you will give the ultimate and always have space in your line-of-sight, so you can avoid giving Nano Boost to a wrong target that can't bring your ultimate to any usefulness, such as Lúcio or Mercy.
    • The common targets for your Nano Boost should be damage dealers rather than tanks. While boosting tanks will give them a better chance of surviving and greatly increase their damage, you will force them to move out of their position to attack the enemy, in order to not waste the damage buff gains from Nano Boost.
    • Even though the Nano Boosted-hero will take less damage by 50%, the effected hero can still die if the enemies are focusing on the boosted-hero. Try to heal the boosted-hero continuously, so that they won't die in the most important engagement.
    • As Ana can both heal allies and damage enemies, along with Biotic Grenade's amplifying healing; she can gain the ultimate charge quickly, so you can use the Nano Boost on your target to push or to defend depending on the situations much faster than other healers.

    Hero Match-ups

    Offense Heroes

Icon-ana Weak2 VS. Icon-genji: Genji excels at flanking, and has all the tools necessary to get into optimal range. He can use Fan of Blades at close range, then Swift Strike to finish Ana off. He can also use Deflect to turn Ana's Biotic Grenade or Sleep Dart against her, though hitting himself with the grenade is extremely difficult. His double jump, swift movement, and ability to deflect shots makes him difficult for Ana to deal with. Note, however, that Ana's sleep dart can ruin Genji's ult by putting him to sleep for the duration or by allowing her allies to gang up on him and kill him.

Icon-ana Fair VS. File:Icon-mccree.png: McCree has solid range, very high accuracy, and high damage, making it relatively easy for him to pick off Ana at range. Likewise, his flashbang can incapacitate Ana in close quarters. However, his lack of mobility makes him a relatively easy to hit target for Ana, and Ana outdamages him at long distances. Ana's sleep dart can shut down McCree if he gets hit with it, and Deadeye can be easily shut down by a competent Ana if the McCree doesn't have someone providing a barrier for him.

Icon-ana Strong VS. Icon-pharah: Ana is one of the best characters against Pharah. Her extreme range combined with high accuracy and reasonably high damage can make short work of Pharah, and a Pharah struck by multiple darts may not realize just how much danger she's in. While it is difficult to hit Pharah with sleep darts if the Pharah is alert, a sleep dart will likely shut down a Pharah for a long time, if not outright kill her due to her falling into a pit or falling down close to a DPS or tank who can quickly kill her at close range, such as Roadhog or Reaper. Pharah's Rocket Barrage can likewise be easily shut down with a single sleep dart. Pharah should target Ana as her highest priority; Ana can easily undo Pharah's damage and kill Pharah herself, making her an ideal first target for Pharah.

Icon-ana Fair VS. Icon-reaper: Reaper can use Shadow Step in order to teleport around the map and attack Ana from unexpected angles. He only needs a single headshot followed by a quick melee to kill Ana and he can escape with Wraith Form should the fight go sour. However, he is a loud flanker and has a larger model than Tracer or Genji, making him easier to hit with the Sleep Dart. Reaper has no mean to attack her at long range, this will let her keep continue harassing Reaper and force him to find a cover. Biotic Grenade prevents his self-healing, and her sleep dart can shut down his Death Blossom ultimate ability before it does too much damage.

Icon-ana Fair VS. Icon-Soldier76: Soldier 76 has excellent range, is highly accurate, can move quickly, and deals damage faster than Ana does. However, his healing ability can be completely shut down with a biotic grenade and he cannot simultaneously shoot and sprint, making him more vulnerable to being shot or sleep darted while attacking. Ana should avoid needless 1 on 1 confrontations with Soldier 76, instead taking advantage of allied characters for support, but she can hold her own if need be.

Icon-ana Weak2 VS. Icon-sombra: Sombra's ability to get around behind Ana's team to attack from unexpected angles using her cloak and teleport abilities makes her dangerous to Ana. While Ana can delay Sombra's ability to heal with a biotic grenade, if a confrontation is going poorly for Sombra, Sombra can teleport away and save herself pretty easily, with little ability for Ana to chase her down and finish her off. However, Sombra is vulnerable to sleep darts; landing a sleep dart on Sombra will likely result in Sombra's death, as Sombra's low hit point total means her only out is to teleport as quickly as possible after being woken up by damage. While Sombra can be chased off by a solo Ana, it is likely to be a distraction that will end in Sombra's team's favor. Sombra is best dealt with by sticking close to allies who can gang up with Ana on Sombra before Sombra can teleport away.

Icon-ana Weak2 VS. Icon-tracer: Tracer's extremely high mobility makes her difficult to hit, and her recall allows her to undo damage and anti-healing effects from biotic grenades. While her low hit point pool means that two hits will kill her, Tracer is likely to simply run away if hit and it is very difficult for Ana to prevent her from doing so. Tracer's ability to get around behind Ana's team and engage Ana from close quarters, combined with Tracer's high damage per second, makes her very dangerous to Ana.

    Defense Heroes

Icon-ana Strong VS. Icon-bastion: Bastion's large hit box makes him very easy for Ana to hit, and his broad hit box while in sentry form makes it possible for Ana to attack him while outside of his own line of sight in some cases. Ana's sleep dart will immediately force him out of sentry mode into recon mode in addition to putting him to sleep, and her sleep dart can also be used against his tank mode in order to help wait it out. Her biotic grenade blocks his self-healing, and she is one of the few characters who outranges him. Bastion should avoid setting up in sentry mode where an Ana can easily peek around a corner and snipe at him; without someone nearby to provide a barrier, he is very vulnerable to her.

Icon-ana Fair VS. Icon-hanzo: Hanzo's heavy damage makes him dangerous to Ana, and his ability to attack from unexpected angles thanks to his climbing ability can sometimes give him an edge. Like Ana, he has no range drop-off, though his accuracy is worse than Ana's at long range, and while his Scatter Arrows can kill Ana in the right circumstances, her narrow character model makes her harder to hit than many other characters. This is a fairly even fight; while Hanzo does more damage, Ana's sleep dart can incapacitate him and her weapon is more accurate than his, even if it doesn't do as much damage. Both should seek to use their team to their advantage; if either character can snipe at the other from behind the protection of a tank's barrier, they have a large advantage.

Icon-ana Fair VS. Icon-Junkrat: Junkrat is a mixed bag for Ana. He is a character with extreme range, but he only has one mobility ability, and his mine and trap are not much of a threat to Ana if Ana sticks with her team and keeps her distance from him. His ability to attack Ana indirectly with grenade spam, especially from unexpected angles, is situationally very dangerous, as he only needs to hit Ana with two grenades to kill her. However, if he is out in the open himself, he is easily picked off or put to sleep with a dart. This is a very feast-or-famine situation; as long as Junkrat stays out of Ana's line of fire, he can apply his usual area denial tactics to keep foes out. If Junkrat is in Ana's line of fire, he can quickly be picked off.

Icon-ana Fair VS. Icon-mei: Mei is primarily dangerous in close quarters, but it is difficult for Mei to get into close quarters with Ana; moreover, Mei's relatively poor mobility makes her easy prey for Ana's sleep dart, and Ana will win a sniper fight with Mei every time. However, Mei's ability to create ice walls can severely disrupt Ana's ability to both heal her allies and attack her enemies, and allow a Mei's team to get in closer than Ana wants while under cover. Likewise, Mei's ultimate ability is very punishing for Ana, who lacks any sort of mobility ability to escape. Mei's overall poor damage makes it hard for Mei to kill an ally who is being actively healed by an Ana, which makes Mei's freeze gun much less useful. While Mei is not personally very dangerous to Ana outside of her ultimate ability, Mei's ability to create walls on demand can put an additional burden on Ana's positioning and cut off allies from healing at critical moments.

Mei's ice wall is one of the few non-ultimate abilities which can totally shut down a Nanoboosted character by cutting off their line of fire. Mei's ultimate itself is a fairly good counter to nanoboost, though her freeze gun is often less useful for such simply due to the high damage of the Nanoboosted character.

Icon-ana Strong VS. Icon-torbjorn: Torbjorn is fairly bad against Ana; her unlimited range allows her to attack his turret from outside of its range in more wide-open areas, and her high accuracy allows her to quickly peek out, shoot the turret, and then retreat to cover without taking damage. Torbjorn himself lacks mobility and is easy prey to sniper fire at range, as well as to sleep darts - and while Torbjorn can deal more damage than Ana at close range, close-quarters combat makes him even more vulnerable to the sleep dart. Torbjorn's best bet against Ana is to avoid setting up his turret anywhere it can easily be sniped by her peeking around a corner without being punished, potentially using himself and his shotgun to punish her for trying, or to try and ambush her.

Icon-ana Fair VS. Icon-widowmaker: Widowmaker can kill Ana with two bodyshots or one headshot, giving her an overall advantage in sniping; however, Widowmaker herself is not a fast-moving target under normal circumstances and is vulnerable to being counter-sniped by Ana's higher rate of fire, sleep darts, and grenades.

    Tank Heroes

Icon-ana Weak2 VS. Icon-dva: D. Va is pretty good against Ana; her defensive matrix can eat Ana's projectiles, including her biotic grenade and her sleep dart, and her high hit point total and high mobility make it relatively easy for her to close in on Ana. However, D. Va is an extremely large target, and in close quarters, is virtually impossible to miss with Ana's sleep dart; the moment D. Va drops her defensive matrix, if the Ana hasn't wasted her sleep dart, she can simply sleep dart the D. Va and escape. Likewise, D. Va deals almost no damage at all at range, making her easy pickings for Ana to shoot and build up ult charge, and if D. Va is distracted by someone else, she can easily be shot in the back or sleep darted from behind with little risk. D. Va is a huge threat to Ana if Ana's sleep dart is on cooldown, and can be an annoying enemy to fight in team fights due to her ability to swallow Ana's projectiles. Teams that run both Winston and D. Va can put Ana on her back foot, as if both characters dive her, Ana only has the ability to deal with at most one of them. The best way for Ana to avoid being harassed by D. Va is for Ana to stick close to characters who are good at dealing with her, such as Reaper and Roadhog.

Icon-ana Fair VS. Icon-orisa: (Incoming Soon)

Icon-ana Fair VS. Icon-reinhardt: Ana and Reinhardt struggle to kill each other. Reinhardt's barrier can shut down any and all of Ana's attacks, and Reinhardt's huge hit point total makes him hard to kill - if he is being attacked, he can simply use his shield to prevent pretty much everything that Ana does to him. However, Reinhardt is very slow while using his shield and he is generally lacking in ranged attacks - for him to attack Ana, he generally needs to ambush her or charge her, and his very large hit box makes him extremely vulnerable to being put to sleep, even mid-charge. Even if Reinhardt manages to ambush Ana, she can usually sleep dart him and get away; however, she struggles to kill him on her own. Additionally, Ana's biotic grenade prevents allied healers from healing him, which makes it even more dangerous to charge into Ana's team, and her healing can totally offset Reinhardt's damage. If Reinhardt is shielding, he should be aware that in close quarters, Ana can potentially simply walk up to him and sleep dart him by walking through his shield. Reinhardt's greatest tool against Ana is his ultimate, which can stun her long enough for him to move up and finish her off, leaving the rest of her team vulnerable and without healing.

Icon-ana Fair VS. Icon-roadhog: Roadhog is a huge threat to Ana in close quarters, but has no ability to do anything to her at a distance of greater than 20 meters. He should be shot at from a distance and is an excellent sleep dart target due to his large size and poor mobility; if he closes with Ana, Ana should do her best to dodge and weave - or better still, hide behind a tank's barrier or shoot him with a sleep dart. Roadhog's Hook, if it lands, will kill Ana every time it lands if the Roadhog knows what he's doing. If Ana is hooked, she should try to Sleep Dart the Roadhog immediately; sometimes a Roadhog will have to reload their weapon or will simply forget to shoot you instantly, giving you an opportunity to escape. Don't hesitate to launch your Biotic Grenade at Roadhog as it will completely nullify his Take a Breather and either force him to retreat or let your team focus their damage to kill him. Her sleep dart can also completely shut down his ultimate ability, even if he gets woken up subsequently.

Icon-ana Weak2 VS. Icon-winston: Winston is dangerous to Ana; he has a very large hit point pool and excellent mobility; he can throw down a barrier and attack Ana through it, putting her in a lose-lose situation, as if she runs through the barrier, he might simply run out of it to avoid opening himself up to her fire. Ana's only real defense against him is the sleep dart, which is fairly easy to land on his large frame, but Ana should make sure not to waste it on a shot that will strike Winston's barrier, as if she is without her sleep dart, he can simply electrocute her to death at will with his gun. The best way to deal with a Winston is to stick close to a character who can deal with him, such as Reaper or Roadhog. Note that Winston's very low damage makes it easy for Ana to offset his damage to other characters, so a Winston should always target Ana first if he can.

Icon-ana Fair VS. Icon-zarya: Zarya can be a problem for Ana. Her energy barriers completely shut off Ana's sleep darts, can protect ulting allies from being shut down by sleep darts, and can shield allied tanks from biotic grenades. Zarya's hit box is smaller than that of other tanks as well, though her lack of mobility abilities makes her relatively easy prey to sleep darts when her barrier isn't up. While Zarya herself generally struggles to close with Ana on her own, and Ana easily outranges Zarya, it is hard for Ana to actually kill Zarya in a fight; Ana needs to stay out of Zarya's range to avoid being killed by Zarya's primary fire. However, Zarya lacks any real ability to close with Ana, so while she can shut down a lot of Ana's offensive abilities, she struggles to kill Ana or to prevent Ana from using her abilities defensively.

    Support Heroes

Icon-ana Weak2 VS. Icon-ana: Ana's Sleep Dart is famously the best tool to stop Nano Boosted Character, which makes Ana to be countered by other Ana in term of shutdown the ultimate. Due to the nature of Biotic Grenade that completely blocks all incoming heal when it hit the enemy, the enemy's Ana can't nullify the blocking debuff and unable to heal her teammates with Dart from her gun or even her Biotic Grenade. Since Ana's players tend to stick behind their teammates, they will try to keep the front line heroes survive as long as possible. When out of a cover or meet each other in some situation, they will be forced to fight in unscoped-match or sniper duel; depending on their distance. Sleep Dart can render the other Ana temporary useless, putting her team on the line without her provide healing. If you know that the enemy's Ana will use Biotic Grenade, try to use it on you or your teammates first to get a heal before it completely blocked from the enemy's; more benefit when it's blast hits the enemy or the other Ana.

Icon-ana Strong VS. Icon-lúcio: As with all healers, Ana's biotic grenade can shut off Lucio's healing ability, and its AoE makes Lucio easier to hit; however, Lucio's Drop the Beat isn't healing and can save allies who are under the effects of a biotic grenade. Lucio is an agile and relatively hard to hit character, but his wall-riding can render his movement somewhat laterally predictable; his relatively low hit point total, combined with her ability to shut off his healing with her biotic grenade, makes her good at dealing with him at range, though if he gets up close he can try and run circles around her in order to avoid being shot. However, Lucio's generally poor damage makes it hard for him to kill Ana, and he generally will avoid confronting her directly, instead doing his best to juke her shots and harass her team.

Icon-ana Strong VS. Icon-mercy: Mercy is perhaps the character who is most negatively effected by Ana's biotic grenade; it completely shuts off Mercy's healing, rendering her into a low DPS character with little value to her team. Mercy can zip around to her allies, but is still fairly easy prey for Ana's sniper rifle, and if Ana can pick off an enemy Mercy in a situation where healing her own allies does not take precedence, she should do so.

Icon-ana Fair VS. Icon-symmetra: Despite Ana is a sniper which can stay far from the battlefield enough to provide support, her low mobility makes her grounded which is risk to Symmetra's camp. Unless Symmetra is hit by Sleep Dart, she can fry you with her high damage from Photon Projector when approach. If you tend to stay far enough, you won't get into the turret nest; so you have to negate the turrets damage dealt to your allies by healing them with Biotic Grenade, which can let them withstand enough and destroy the nest. Try to keep some distance to Symmetra and you will be fine with it.

Icon-ana Strong VS. Icon-zenyatta: Zenyatta's Orb of Harmony and Transcendence are literally countered by her Biotic Grenade. Ana's attack range allows her to continue harass Zenyatta from a safe location. His shield also doesn't regenerate under the Biotic Grenade's debuff. Anyway, keep in mind that Zenyatta has high firepower to work against you. His Orb of Discord will make you or your allies take more damage which you mightn't be able to outheal them. Your Nano Boost can be countered by his Transcendence, especially when Biotic Grenade is on cooldown. Try to fight him in a safe place with covers and keep Biotic Grenade when he is ready to use Transcendence.

    Story

    Everyone must find their cause.
    ~ Ana Amari

One of the founding members of Overwatch, Ana uses her skills and expertise to defend her home and the people she cares for.[1] Hailing from a long line of decorated soldiers, Ana inspired confidence and loyalty in her colleagues[2] and endowed her daughter, Fareeha Amari — Pharah, with an intense sense of duty and honor.[3] Like her daughter, she bore a tattoo of an Eye of Horus as a symbol of protection.[4]

Ana is regarded as one of the world's deadliest snipers. She originally used a Kinamura rifle, upon which she added a notch for every life she took. Each life weighed heavily on her conscience, and while some snipers preferred to wound targets, in order to lure out more potential targets, she preferred to perform clean kills, disliking causing needless suffering. Her right eye, originally cybernetic, made her vision six times greater than normal, to the extent where she rarely even needed to use the scope.[5]

Ana and her daughter Fareeha Amari with other Overwatch agents

As the Omnic Crisis inflicted a heavy toll on Egypt, the country's depleted and undermanned security forces relied on elite snipers for support. Among them was Ana Amari, who was widely considered to be the world's best. Her superior marksmanship, decision-making, and instincts made her a natural selection to join the Overwatch strike team,[1] of which she was one of the founding members.[6] Overwatch successfully ended the war. At some point in time, she met the wife of fellow agent Gérard Lacroix, Amélie Lacroix. Two weeks after Amélie was rescued by Overwatch from being kidnapped, Gérard was killed and Amélie was believed to have been kidnapped once again.[7]

    Ana Killed

Ana believed to be killed by Widowmaker

Following the success of Overwatch's original mission, Ana served for many years as Strike Commander Jack Morrison's second-in-command.[1] She raised her daughter, Fareeha, during this time, instructing her in martial arts.[8] Despite her responsibilities in leading the organization, Ana refused to step away from combat operations.[1] She was aware of her daughter's desire to join Overwatch herself, but Ana was against it.[8] This led to a strained relationship between mother and daughter.[2] She remained on active duty well into her fifties.

Ana's last mission was an anti-Talon operation conducted by Overwatch, part of a force led by Jack Morrison which rescued a number of scientists that Talon had taken hostage. While Overwatch was successful in this regard, the Talon operative known as Widowmaker was able to take out a number of agents. The operation led to a sniper duel between her and Ana, as they made their way throughout the urban terrain. Ana was able to temporarily incapacitate Widowmaker, hitting her in her helmet. But upon seeing Widowmaker's face, she froze, recognizing her as Amélie. It was all the time Widowmaker needed to take her own shot, shooting Ana through the scope of her rifle and into her right eye.[7] It was believed that the shot killed her.[8]

In truth, Ana survived that encounter, despite being gravely wounded and losing the eye.[1] The world believed that she was dead.[8] During her recovery, she wrestled with the weight of a life spent in combat, and she chose to stay out of the world's growing conflicts. However, as time passed, she realized she could not sit on the sidelines while people threatened her city and the innocents around her. Thus, Ana rejoined the fight to protect her country from the forces that would destabilize it, and most importantly, to keep her family and her closest allies safe.[1] She wrote a letter to her daughter, explaining her absence.[8]

I don't care about your war, but I do care about you. You need me, Jack. You need someone to watch your back.

    Ana in Egypt

Disguised as a masked bounty hunter, Ana sabotaged several Talon operations in Egypt, drawing attention from Reaper and his associate Hakim, as well as Jack Morrison. The conflict came to a head when Ana and Morrison were lured into a trap at Hakim's compound in Giza, leading to a battle between the three former comrades. Though Ana sided with Jack and forced Reaper to retreat after unmasking him, she was disturbed by his visage and parting words, reminding her that Overwatch had been responsible for their suffering. Following the encounter Ana explained that she cared about Jack, not the war he was fighting, and resolved to watch over him as the two departed.[9]

    Trivia

    • Ana's story draws parallels with the story of Horus from Egyptian mythology. During an altercation with a former friend (in this case, Widowmaker), she lost her eye. Additionally, both her and Pharah possess an eye of Horus tattoo.
    • Her voice actress is an Egyptian woman who was recorded from Cairo.[10] The voice actress's name, Aysha Selim, was not revealed until September 29, 2016 in a reply on the official forums.[11]
    • Ana was added to the PTR on July 12, 2016.[12] She was added to the live PC version of the game on July 19, 2016.[13]
    • Ana's sleep dart has a minimum cooldown of 7 seconds, even if cooldowns are set to 0%. This is to prevent Ana from keeping an enemy asleep indefinitely in certain Arcade and Custom games.

    Development

    Ana Amari Concept

Concept art of Ana and her daughter, Fareeha Amari

Ana was the first hero added to the game after its launch. Her development grew from a prototype support character called the Alchemist, who could heal allies and damage enemies by throwing potion vials. When it was decided that Ana Amari would be a playable character, the team took to the idea of her being a support sniper in order to distinguish her from Widowmaker and incorporated elements of the Alchemist's kit into her design, building upon the biotic technology used by Mercy and Soldier: 76.[citation needed] Prior to being revealed, it was widely speculated that Ana and Sombra were the same character, resulting from the photographs of her Shrike mask being misidentified as Sombra.[14][15][16]

Several PR assets on Blizzard's press center website for Ana are labeled "Shrike" instead of "Ana", suggesting that her placeholder name during development was Shrike.[17] The name Shrike was used for one of her epic skins, in which she wears a mask previously seen in pre-release easter eggs.

Ana was teased on Temple of Anubis, with an opened document picturing her wearing her Shrike mask.[18] Her scope could be seen being worked on in a GameSpot video.[19] Also in the video was an early prototype with a modified Widowmaker model seen in the character selection screen, in the support section.[20]

    • Biotic Grenade
      • Effect duration has been reduced from 5 seconds to 4 seconds

    Hero Balance Change;
    General
    • Dealing damage to things other than players (like Torbjörn's turret or Symmetra's teleporter) no longer charges ultimate abilities
    • Ultimate costs have been increased by 25% for all heroes
    Developer Comment
Game-changing ultimate abilities were coming up a bit too frequently. This change helps keep them in check while still allowing them to be powerful.
    • Nano Boost
      • No longer increases move speed
    Developer Comment
The increased speed from Ana’s Nano Boost made the ability feel unstoppable and forced Ana players to select targets that could really take advantage of the speed boost. Removing the speed boost means that Ana has a reason to apply Nano Boost to a larger variety of heroes, and enemies can fend off the attack more easily.

    Developer Comments
So far, we haven't seen any indication that Ana is too strong overall, but her ultimate charges a little too fast, especially considering the impact it can have on a match. Also, her Biotic Grenades are getting a small boost to help her hit multiple targets.

    Patch Features

Ana portrait New Hero: Ana (Support)
After being out of the fight for several years, one of Overwatch's founding members is returning. Introducing Ana — a battle-scarred veteran who supports her teammates from a distance using a unique and highly specialized collection of weapons.

Ana’s primary weapon is her Biotic Rifle, which fires long-range darts that can restore the health of her allies or deal ongoing damage to her enemies. Meanwhile, her Biotic Grenade is perfect for a close-quarters clash, simultaneously healing teammates and injuring foes caught in its small area of effect. (Affected allies will also receive a temporary increase to all incoming healing, while affected enemies can’t be healed for a few moments.) And if the battle starts to get out of hand, Ana's sidearm can fire a Sleep Dart, knocking her adversaries unconscious.

Plus, Ana's ultimate ability, Nano Boost, empowers one of her teammates, granting faster movement, increased damage, and resistance to enemy attacks.
