Baptiste uses a device to create a field that prevents allies from dying. The generator can be destroyed.
Healing:
Any deficit from 10% HP
Health:

Cast time:
0.8 second cast animation
Duration:
5 seconds (generator)
5.5 seconds (field)
Area of effect:
6.5 meter radius
Projectile speed:
60 meters per second

Ability details:
  • Prevents the HP of Baptiste and his allies from going below 10%. It even prevents environmental death, but healing the HP lost this way will not give ultimate charge.
  • Heroes with HP below 10% will instantly be healed to 10% when entering the field. Biotic Grenade can amplify or block this; if the healing is blocked, Immortality Field will still prevent all incoming damage.
  • The generator can be thrown and bounced off walls. The arc is identical to that of Biotic Launcher's alternate fire, except Immortality Field collides with the skybox.
  • Unaffected by Defense Matrix, Deflect, and Kinetic Grasp.
  • The field requires line of sight, but both the thrown generator and the field ignore barriers.
  • Once deployed, the generator can be hacked and disabled for the rest of its duration. (Technically the hack lasts 10 seconds, but the generator does not last that long.)
  • If the generator expires, the field will linger for 0.5 seconds. If the generator is destroyed, the field will still linger, but not as long.
  • Although the ability has a casting animation, the generator is spawned the instant the button is pressed and therefore cannot be cancelled mid-cast by a stun or hack.

Type
Ultimate Ability
Baptiste creates a matrix that doubles the damage and healing effects of friendly projectiles that pass through it.
Damage:
Healing:
+100% healing amplified
Duration:
10 seconds
Max. range:
35 meters
Area of effect:
9x5 meter rectangle, with 1 meter beneath the ground

Ability details:
  • Before being deployed, the orientation can be changed by pressing the ultimate key again.
  • Amplifies hitscan and projectile attacks alike, coming from any direction. This includes abilities such as Blizzard, Dynamite, and Biotic Orb. (Note that it does not change the total damage/healing for Biotic Orb, just the rate of damage/healing.)
  • Does not amplify the damage of melee-based projectiles such as Chain Hook or Whip Shot.
  • Amplification Matrix does not actually double damage. When combined with other amplification abilities, they are added together. For example, Amplification Matrix (+100%) and Mercy's Damage Boost (+30%) will result in +130% damage (230% damage overall).
  • Can be destroyed by EMP.

Strategy

You can fire his primary fire and his secondary fire at the same time.

The secondary fire can be shot perfectly upwards so they land on the same spot later.

Using Regenerative Burst at the start of an engagement can help your teammates tank sustained damage long enough to win the fight.

The trajectory of the Immortality Field generator is the same as the secondary fire, so that you can shoot a healing grenade first to make sure you throw the immortality field where you want. However, Immortality Field interacts with the sky hitbox, meaning it may hit that and fail to reach its intended location if thrown too high.

You can use the Immortality Field to body block a door or a spawn room door. Place the drone in a corner where it can't be destroyed and use Baptiste's body to prevent the enemy/enemies from getting through. This is helpful in preventing an overtime contest or to buy some time to stall for your team to finish off the last players on the point or payload. Only do this if you know or you're confident that you can prevent a contest.

As Immortality Field is unable to be hacked before it hits the ground, it is possible to throw it out as an enemy Sombra is using EMP, and have it land after the ultimate's cast is over. Doing so will leave Immortality Field unaffected, so it will still function.

Along with his amplification matrix, you can easily penetrate Zenyatta's Transcendence, which heals 300 health per second, to an enemy if you manage to deal perfect headshots.

Match-Ups and Team Synergy

Tank

Hero Match-Up Team Synergy
Icon-dva
D.Va
Immortality field is a great counter to bomb. For best effect, tell you team field is off cooldown, and place the lamp as late as possible to reduce the chance of it being destroyed during self-destructs activation time. D.va's large critical hitbox makes her a great target for your primary fire to farm you ultimate. Beware that if you play a more isolated/backline position, D.va will likely hunt you down to force immortality field out. Have an escape route, or use exo-boots to help dodge some of the damage Baptiste doesn't synergise as well with dive comps due to his lack of horizontal mobility and the slow projectile speed of his healing.
Icon-orisa
Orisa
Orisa tends to play fixed positions, and her shield can be burnt down quickly with Amplification Matrix or eight bursts from your Biotic Launcher. Orisa can use Halt! to pull you out of corners or Immortality Field (if you stand at the edge). Orisa can fight you at long range and tank some of your shots with Fortify. Orisa can also increase her damage with Supercharger. Paring Baptiste up with Orisa gives the entire team good survivability, safe spots to fire from, and cover to fall back and receive healing. Pairing Orisa's Supercharger up with Baptiste's Amplification Matrix also gives the entire team a window of opportunity to deal an immense amount of damage to the enemy.
Icon-reinhardt
Reinhardt
Reinhardt's Charge can drag people out of Immortality Field's area of effect. If you see a Charge connect, throw the drone at the destination to save the pinned teammate. If you think Reinhardt has Earthshatter, then consider either playing on the high ground or having Exo-Boots charged to allow you to dodge the effect. In general, it is a good idea to take high ground against Rein/Zarya comps that have little vertical mobility or long-range damage. Baptiste works well in deathball/brawl comps, where AoE healing quickly charges amp matrix. Reinhardt is able to 1 shot all 200 health heroes with firestrike as long as it passes through the matrix. Consider combining with a CC ultimate/ability to pull this combo off.
Icon-roadhog
Roadhog
Roadhog can pull you and your allies out of Immortality Field. If predicted, you can dodge his hook with Exo-Boots and call it out to your team. Finally, if predicted, toss immortality field at the enemy Roadhog so if he hooks you, you cannot die. Scrap Gun now unloads up to 300 damage per shot with Baptiste's ult. Matrix plus Whole Hog make a high damage combo. In the event Roadhog gets anti'd or slept, Baptiste can throw his drone to protect him. Baptiste synergises well with bunker style comps.
Icon-sigma
Sigma
Sigma's Kinetic Grasp will gain double the shields if he absorbs attacks that have been amplified by your ultimate. Try and keep out of the range of his Hyperspheres. When he triggers Gravitic Flux, use Regenerative Burst to heal the initial damage and poke, then place Immortality Field as late as possible to save your team from the fall damage. Friendly Sigmas can deal a whopping 220 damage if his attack is amplified by your ultimate, but requires your field to be placed relatively near the enemy due to his short range. Accretion can also be amplified by your ult. Baptiste synergizes well with bunker-style comps.
link=http://overwatch.gamepedia
Wrecking Ball
Hammond's crowd control can be used to move people out of Immortality Field, and his tendency to disrupt team positions makes your job harder as a healer. However, his large hitbox makes him an easier target for your primary fire, especially if someone CC's him. Use immortality field to save people from a Piledriver/Minefield combo. Hammond's speed makes him difficult to land healing on. Aggressively follow up on characters left out of position by his displacement effect.
Icon-winston
Winston
His shield blocks your healing grenades. You should activate your Regenerative Burst before he lands and places it. This helps you survive a dive and to build ult from his cleave damage. His ultimate doesn't cause that much damage but causes a lot of disruption, making Immortality Field a poor counter to it. Baptiste doesn't synergise as well with dive comps due to his lack of horizontal mobility and the slow projectile speed of his healing. Proactively using Immortality Field can allow your team to stay on a dive target for longer.
Icon-zarya
Zarya
Play far from your team to avoid Graviton Surge, use your ultimate to amplify your healing to make a makeshift transcendence. Placing your ultimate in front of your Graviton Surge is a surefire way to melt anyone caught in it.

Damage

Hero Match-Up Team Synergy
Icon-ashe
Ashe
You can deny the Dynamite+Body shot kill combo with Regenerative Burst, but it won't work with a headshot. Also, Ashe has more range and more damage than you. Her Dynamite can set you on fire and possibly destroy the Immortality Field drone. Nullify B.O.B with your ultimate so he will die in seconds. B.O.B. can be deployed to destroy your drone while Ashe focuses on you (or vice versa). Place your ultimate in front of B.O.B to make him an absoloute killing machine. Ashe’s dynamite will deal a minimum of 260 damage if amplified by your ultimate. Amplification matrix will not increase coach gun's knockback.
Icon-bastion
Bastion
Bastion's high damage can melt your team if you're unprepraed, it's best to fight Bastion with your immortality field outside of Bastion's view, but still in range for your teammates. Bastions damage with Amplification Matric will kill tanks in seconds, it's best to place it in front of Bastion when you know where the enemy team is going, otherwise you could place it incorrectly.
Icon-doomfist
Doomfist
Doomfist can push people out of Immortality Field and possibly kill. He's too fast to stop with your drone, especially Rocket Punch. However, Doomfist can't fight you effectively at long range. Doomfist's ultimate can be nullified with your Immortality Field, make sure to place it as Doomfist is coming down to reduce the possibility of it being destroyed. Doomfist doesn't synergize weill with Baptiste because of his horizontal mobility. This makes landing your arcing healing grenades even harder.
Icon-echo
Echo
(To be added) (To be added)
Icon-genji
Genji
Genji can use Swift Strike to dodge your bullets, close the distance, or attack you. Deflect can send your bullets back to you or block your healing grenades. You should also be cautious if he deflects anything amplified by your ult (such as Firestrike) because it could result in your teammates getting killed. Try to keep your distance from Genji. Dragonstrike's swinging can slash you and your drone at the same time, but the "grace" period after you field goes down means it takes three swings instead of two. This is highly unlikely, but if you and an enemy Baptiste put your ults near each other, it could be possible to double the amplification by having Genji deflect projectiles through it. Besides that, Genji is too mobile for your healing grenades but your ult will amplify his shurikens.
Icon-hanzo
Hanzo
You may have some even footing with Hanzo. Naturally, a single arrow aimed at your head will kill you. However, Immortality Field can counter this ad you can then recover your health with Regenerative Burst, Hanzo will have to prioritize destroying your lamp, leaving him open for you to kill him. Remember, your gun has falloff damage and his arrows do not. Storm Arrows can be a problem because of their quick discharge. Immortality Field can counter Dragonstrike. Hanzo's arrows benefit from your ult. They can do high amount damage to tanks, with a single headshot capable for 500 damage. Unfortunately, it doesn't affect Draongstrike
Icon-junkrat
Junkrat
Immortality Field is one of the best counters to RIP-Tire, although smart Junkrat players will often wait for you to use the cooldown, or simply wait until the Field expires before detonating the Tire. Amplification Matrix won't work on RIP-Tire, but it will work on his normal abilities. Both his Frag Launcher and Concussion Mines can kill a squishy target with one direct hit.
File:Icon-mccree.png
McCree
(To be added) McCree's Deadeye can be affected by Amplification Matrix, but it doesn't lock on faster. McCree can shoot while locked on half of the way and still 1-shot opponent.

Icon-pharah
Pharah
Your Biotic Launcher's primary fire can be a useful tool to dispatch an enemy Pharah, however this should only be done at medium ranges, as your recoil and damage falloff will make killing her harder at longer ranges. Amplification Matrix can help you and any allied Pharah counters kill her much faster, while Immortality Field can be used to save your team from a Rocket Barrage. Try and throw the Field as far as you can from her ultimate splash radius, as it can be quickly destroyed by Barrage. All of Pharah's rockets will deal twice the damage. Her Rocket Launcher can one-shot targets and Barrage can shred through entire teams.
Icon-reaper
Reaper

Icon-Soldier 76
Soldier: 76
You and Soldier: 76 have similar effective ranges, however, your burst fire weapon may lose against his fully automatic one. Soldier: 76 also possesses burst damage in the form of his Helix Rockets, whereas you have none. Always try to take the high ground with Exo Boots when fighting a Soldier one-on-one, and use Regenerative Burst to keep yourself in the fight longer. Tactical Visor can target your drone, so try to keep it out of his line of sight. Place your ultimate in front of your Soldier: 76, especially when he uses his ult, as it is likely to secure a kill.
Icon-sombra
Sombra
Immortality Field cannot be hacked or disrupted by EMP until it fully deploys. If you see a Sombra going in for an EMP, pre-emptively throw your Immortality Field straight up in the air, or bounce it off a wall, and it will still work once deployed. You can also pre-emptively activate Regenerative Burst to give your team a small burst of heals after the EMP, which is especially important if any of your teammates have shield health, like Zarya or Zenyatta, who will be left extremely vulnerable after an EMP. Be aware that EMP can completely destroy your Amplifcation Matrix, so do not place it if you suspect a Sombra has EMP In a 1v1 scenario, your damage can usally force Sombra to teleport away, if not outright kill her if she's too slow to react. If you're being hacked from behind and you do not think you can react fast enough to cancel the Hack by shooting her, you can activate Regenerative Burst to keep yourself alive and take the 1v1. (To be added)
Icon-symmetra
Symmetra
Symmetra's energy orbs move slow, but it deals a lot of damage. At close, be careful about her beam reaching level 3 because that can shred through easily if you lack Immortality Field. Her turrets can also be a nuisance to you. Photon Barrier can block large amounts of damage and healing from you, especially if it's amplified. (To be added)
Icon-torbjörn
Torbjörn
Use your primary fire to destroy Turrets. Despite Immortality Field hovering over the ground, it can still be destroyed by Molten Core if it is placed directly over it. Place your ultimate in front of his turret for a potential 100 dps turret.
Icon-tracer
Tracer
Your Biotic Launcher's primary fire can kill Tracer in one burst, if you hit all headshots, however her fast movement and small hitbox make this difficult to achieve, but even hitting a few shots will often force her to Recall. If you are being harassed by a Tracer, you can use your Exo Boots to take any high ground where she will be unable to contest you. If you or any of your team gets stuck by her Pulse Bomb, a quick Immortality Field will prevent it from instantly killing anyone in the field. With Amplifcation Matrix, you are able to kill Tracer with one burst of bodyshots. Tracer will often be on the flank and away from your healing, but you can try and lob healing grenades at her when she is in your line of sight. Pulse Pistols and Pulse Bomb can be amplified with your ult.
Icon-widowmaker
Widowmaker
Widow will be playing outside of your effective range, and it is unwise to try and challenge her at long-range directly. If she is on high ground nearby you, you can attempt to jump up to her perch and fire upon her, but your predictable jump path can make you easy to headshot. You can use Immortality Field to challenge her in desperate scenarios. Place the Field behind a corner so she cannot prematurely destroy it, and move away from her line of sight before the timer runs out. Amplification Matrix can be used to put more pressure on her at longer ranges, but the threat of her oneshot still persists. Amplifcation Matrix can allow a Widowmaker to kill targets below 240 HP instantly with a bodyshot, and targets below 600 HP instantly with a headshot. You also use Immortality Field to give your friendly Widow an edge over an enemy one attempting to counter-snipe her.

Icon-ana
Ana
Avoid using your Exo Boots to jump too high when in an Ana's line of sight, as your predictable movement path can make you an easy target for her Biotic Rifle or her Sleep Dart. If a large portion of your team gets hit by her Biotic Grenade, you can use Immortality Field to keep them alive, then use Regenerative Burst in combination with your Biotic Launcher's secondary fire to quickly heal them back up. Keep in mind that Immortality Field does not cleanse the anti-healing debuff, it will only stop teammates from dying. Amplification Matrix pairs greatly with Ana. The healing and damage of her gun increases to 140 each and Biotic Grenade heals 200 HP and damages 120 HP. At one point, an ally could receive 130 healing from both her healing darts and his healing grenades.

You can kill a Mercy solo when she's resurrecting someone When Mercy is resurrecting someone in a teamfight, place immortality field so she can get them up without dying.
Icon-moira
Moira
Duels with Moira often depend on which Biotic Orb she uses. She is able to sustain herself far more easily than you can by using Biotic Grasp's regeneration in conjunction with her healing Biotic Orb. Her burst damage potential is low without a damage orb, but her main attack requires little effort to aim, making it a necessity to land your shots.Initiate with regenerative burst and land headshots to dispatch her before her healing outpaces yours. Don't be afraid to use Immortality field if you're losing a duel against a Moira, as there's little she can do to counter it. (To be added)
Icon-zenyatta
Zenyatta
(To be added) Orbs of Destruction deal 96 damage to the body and a fully charged volley will deal 480 (given they all land). Also, discorded targets will take even more damage combined with Amplification Matrix.

Story

An elite combat medic and ex-Talon operative, Baptiste now uses his skills to help those whose lives have been impacted by war. He possesses an innate desire to help people.[2] In correspondence obtained by Trung Le Nguyen, Cuerva noted that Baptiste is a skilled marksman despite being a medic, and boasted unusually high endurance, versatility, and even luck.[3]

Baptiste loves to eat—it's been suggested that his favorite dish is pork griot and lalo. Not many people know that he has a sweet tooth, and he loves to kick back with a tall drink with a lot of ice. He is fluent in Haitian Creole, French,[1] and English.[4] His equipment is a collection of armor and weaponry acquired over the years. Some are from the black market, and some are modified from his Caribbean Coalition and Talon gear; Baptiste has always been resourceful.[1]

Baptiste is an only child, but has several cousins.[1]

Caribbean Coalition

Choices? What do you know about choices? 30 million orphaned children. I was one of them. The Omnic War robbed us of our choices. To survive, you did what you had to do. Steal or starve; kill or be killed. You helped your friends and hurt anyone who got in your way. If you hungered to rise above your circumstances, then when someone offered you a hand up, even the Devil, you took it. It wasn't complicated. At least, that was the lie I told myself.
~ Baptiste

Baptiste during the Omnic Crisis

Jean-Baptiste Augustin was one of the 30 million children orphaned by the Omnic Crisis.[2] He grew up in an orphanage outside Port-de-Paix alongside his childhood friend, Roseline Mondésir. Their childhood dream was to build a clinic for the people of their neighbourhood. As a teenager, he looked up to Overwatch.[5] However, with limited opportunities and resources, Baptiste enlisted in the military. The Caribbean Coalition, a pan-island force formed in response to the Crisis, became his new home. Guided by his innate desire to help people, Baptiste chose the path of a combat medic and served in an elite branch of the Caribbean Coalition's special ops. While with the Coalition, he often cobbled together useful equipment from whatever he could find.[2] He had joined the Coalition with the dream of being a hero, like the ones he saw on Overwatch recruitment posters, but the group never came to Haiti. By the time it disbanded, Baptiste had set his dreams of being a hero aside.[5]

After his service was complete, Baptiste struggled to find a demand for his unique skills. He turned to one of the few opportunities open to him: joining the Talon mercenary group, one of the many organizations that were poised to profit off the chaos in the war's aftermath.[2] Baptiste joined Talon alongside many of his former squad mates, all of them unaware of Talon's true nature.[1]

Talon

The truth is, I had choices, and I made them; but when you think you're a big man, it's hard to admit that you are not a brave one. Even harder when you understand that making a living is not enough. You must make a difference.
~ Baptiste
BaptisteTalon

Baptiste joins Talon

As a member of Talon, Baptiste retained his position of combat medic.[1] Captain Cuerva trained him personally.[3] For the first time ever, Baptiste had a taste of the good life. Talon's missions were easy and paid well,[2] and weren't that different from the ones he'd carried out as a member of the Coalition.[1] He put aside some of his earnings to set up a clinic in his hometown.[2] During his early days in Talon, he befriended Mauga, and the two of them often took to the field together, taking part in numerous extractions.[5] He also met a woman named Sombra, and over time, the two became good friends.[1]

Baptiste served in a strike team under the command of Captain Cuerva.[3] However, things in Talon changed. Slowly, his unit's orders escalated in brutality, expanding into assassinations and operations with civilian casualties.[2] He took part in operations in Singapore and Makati, both of which involved civilian casualties. Cuerva told him the missions were on the level, but while he wanted to believe it, he couldn't.[5] Confronted by his team's actions, Baptiste realized he was perpetuating a cycle of violence like the one that had destroyed his own community.[2] Like a frog in boiling water, he realized that the descent into brutality had occurred over time, and only now could he see how far he'd fallen. He tried to convince his squad mates to join him in abandoning Talon, but they refused.[1] Baptiste considered leaving by himself, but knew that the only way anyone left Talon was in a coffin.[5]

Monte Cristi

I’m not going back there. Cuerva said there would be no civilian casualties.
And you were naïve enough to believe him? Look around, Baptiste. This is what we do. Remember Makati? Or that time in Singapore? Or did you conveniently forget how those went down, too?
Cuerva told us that those missions were on the level.
Of course he did. And of course they weren’t. But who cares? We’re in too deep, Baptiste. There are no good people. Not you, not me. All we can do is have fun while we’ve got the chance.”
~ Baptiste and Mauga before parting ways

A mirror darkly

Events came to a head at Monte Cristi. Alongside Mauga, and under the command of Cuerva, a Talon unit deployed to the town to assassinate Daniel Fernández; leader of the Playa Cartel who had been encroaching on Talon's territory. However, upon reaching Fernández's safehouse, they found the crime lord wasn't there. Cuerva ordered Talon to tear the town apart until they found him, and they'd done just that, inflicting collateral damage and civilian casualties in the process. He protested to Cuerva, but he told him to keep searching for Fernández, and that if the civilians wanted to hide him, that was on them. He came face to face with a young girl who, mirroring his own experiences in the Omnic Crisis, stared at him, seeing him as nothing more than an unknown soldier who had destroyed her home. Baptiste lowered his rifle and fled into the night, the sound of screams following him.

Baptiste tried to escape in a fishing boat, but he was confronted by Mauga. He declared that Mauga would either have to let him go or kill him. Over the radio, he heard Cuerva's voice, asking if Mauga had found Baptiste yet. After a long pause, Mauga said that he hadn't found Baptiste. He let Baptiste go, telling him to "call me when you're ready to come home." Baptiste quietly thanked his friend, and drove the boat off into the night.[5]

Dealing with the Devil

I know better than to underestimate Baptiste. I helped train him myself, and he was one of our best. I’ve never known a medic to be such a good shot, and his adaptability to new situations is a rare talent. All of us have seen our fair share of conflict, but Baptiste was built to survive. I swear he has the Devil’s own luck.
~ D. Cuerva

Baptiste turns against Talon

Disgusted with what he had done, and determined to forge a new path for himself,[2] Baptiste fled to Tortuga, Haiti.

However, Talon refused to let him go. Baptiste knew too much, and they sent operatives after him to silence him. Agent after agent came for him, including Baptiste's former comrades. To stay under the radar, Baptiste drifted from place to place, aiding in humanitarian efforts around the globe. The few Talon members who managed to track him down were never seen again.[2] One strike team consisted of former members of Baptiste's unit, led by his former mentor, Cuerva. The strike team had orders to apprehend or eliminate him. He evaded capture, rendering the strike team MIA, and delivered their emblems to Cuerva, along with a message to seek him out. Contact was lost with Cuerva and his team soon afterwards;[3] the squad had made the mistake of coming after him one by one. Baptiste later commented that he had saved Cuerva for last.[5]

A Better World

I'm going to fight for a better world. For some, that means a bandage. For others, a bullet. Today... I give you the choice.
~ Baptiste

Baptiste worked toward creating a better world, healing where he could and fighting when he had to. He knew that he could not undo his past, but that making a difference now was what mattered.[2] He kept a low profile in order to stay out of Talon's crosshairs, and began carrying out humanitarian work. This line of work made him familiar with the similar efforts of Dr. Angela Ziegler,[1] whom he met at an aid site in Venezuela.[5]

What You Left Behind

Four years, and you never even wrote. That hurts me, buddy, deep inside. What were you doing all this time? Breaking hearts? Traveling the world? Actually, don’t tell me. We’ll have lots of time on the way back to Talon HQ.

A less than pleasant reunion

Four years after Monte Cristi, Baptiste visited Ros in her clinic, helping out with the patients. The clinic was experience a shortage of drugs, as Sainclair Pharmaceuticals had kept raising prices. Night had fallen by the time he left the clinic, and he headed for Lefort's—a place he had frequented a lot during his childhood. However, upon entering, he saw only three men present. Mr. Lefort, and a pair of Talon operatives—Trung Le Nguyen, and Mauga. Mauga was his usual jovial self, but it was clear to Baptiste that they weren't here to socialize. As it turned out, they wanted Baptiste's help on a job—visit Vernand Sainclair of Sainclair Pharmaceuticals and get him to pay the money he owed Talon. Baptiste had little love for Sainclair, given the outrageous prices he was charging for his medicines, but he knew better than to trust his former colleagues. However, he had few alternatives. Mauga had revealed that he knew about Ros's clinic, and Baptiste knew that he couldn't take both of them out in a fight. He agreed to do the job, and Nguyen gave him an envelope with the operation's details. As to what would happen after said operation, Mauga told Baptiste not to worry about it.

Baptiste met with the two the following morning, outfitted in his old combat armor (though only after burning off the Talon insignia). They arrived at Sainclair's mansion. Nguyen explained that they'd scheduled an appointment with the man, so all they had to do was walk in and see him. That part of the plan worked as far as the mansion's library, where they were confronted by the mansion's private security. Before they could open fire, Mauga activated his shield. In the ensuring firefight, Baptiste used his rifle to merely incapacitate his targets, but Nguyen was far more accurate and lethal. Mauga got the location of Sainclair from the last surviving security guard before breaking the man's neck. In the aftermath, he reflected how easy it had been to slip back into his old habits as a Talon operative.

The trio fought their way through the mansion, Baptiste and Mauga getting back into the old tandem they had utilized in their days together in Talon. They made their way to Sainclair's office, and found the man covering, holding a firearm. He was quickly disarmed, and Nguyen asked why they shouldn't just kill him right now. To bargain for his life, Sainclair revealed that days ago, he had received a recall order from Winston—he was a former Overwatch member, and he had information on Overwatch agents. He explained that he'd been a handler in Overwatch, but had fed information to Talon, so that when the organization collapsed, he'd been well paid for his services. Baptiste was disgusted at his double-dealing, but Sainclair stated that he had no right to judge him. That said, Nguyen wasn't impressed—they already had access to this information, as ex-Overwatch agents were already part of Talon. Mauga bid that Baptiste kill Nguyen as a means of proving his loyalty. Baptiste was sorely tempted to end Sainclair's life, but knew that if he executed someone in cold blood, that was a line there was no going back from. He dropped a flashbang, and used his exo-boots to propel himself and Sainclair through the office's skylight. A shot tore through his arm, but he survived. Baptiste slipped into the undergrowth with Sainclair, while Mauga called out that he was only making things worse.

Baptiste

Baptiste got himself and Sainclair to a wharf, where he bound his wound. He told Sainclair that he'd send for someone to pick him up, and that from now on, he was going to provide his products for free. And that if he didn't do that, he'd let Talon know where he was. Sainclair, deep in shock, agreed to the terms, and asked why Baptiste hadn't killed him. Baptiste declared that he wasn't worth it, and headed off to get a private vessel that he could escape in. However, Mauga found him, mimicking their confrontation of four years prior. It was a repeat of history that wasn't lost on Mauga, who declared that he couldn't let Baptiste go this time. The two engaged in a gun battle—Mauga wanted to bring in Baptiste alive, but that didn't rule out bodily harm in the process. Baptiste feigned surrender, but threw a device up into the air, and shot it, detonating it. The pier was devastated in the resulting blast, and Baptiste survived through the use of his immortality field. There was no sign of Mauga, but Baptiste believed he had survived. He sailed off in a private yacht owned by Sainclair.

An hour later, Baptiste sent a text message to Ros, telling her about Sainclair, and to be careful. He knew it would be a long time before he could return, and that Talon would likely keep eyes on Ros's clinic. He scrolled through Sainclair's data on Overwatch, and discovered that a Dr. Angela Ziegler was a member. He decided that if Talon was coming for her, she had a right to know. He'd need help tracking her down however, and to that end, he contacted Sombra.[5]

Trivia

  • Baptiste is Hero 30 and the ninth new hero added to the game.
  • Baptiste is the only hero in the game who has different ammo for his weapon's two modes of fire.
  • Baptiste is the first, and so far only, playable character originating from the Caribbean.
  • He is the first Hero in the game stated to be a former member of Talon which he left for moral reasons.
  • Jean-Baptiste Augustin is a French name derived from two saints, Saint John the Baptist and Saint Augustine of Hippo. He also shares his name with a French painter.
    • "Jean-Baptiste" is a relatively common French-language name, and it has equivalents in Spanish ("Juan Bautista") and Italian ("Giovanni Battista").
    • John the Baptist was the son of the Virgin Mary's cousin Elizabeth. After heralding the coming of a greater religious figure for some time, he baptized his cousin Jesus Christ in the Jordan River, hence his title. He was said to have adhered to a humble diet of locusts and wild honey, and his beheading is the origin of the idiom "head on a silver platter".
    • St. Augustine of Hippo is practically synonymous with his conversion to Christianity after a youth filled with sin, as detailed in Confessions. While the circumstances were not as extreme as St. Augustine's, Baptiste certainly did have a new and better life after Talon, making the surname "Augustin" particularly appropriate for the character.
  • Baptiste's stance on killing is explored in What You Left Behind, though could be contradicted in one instance. It is stated that he has never killed anyone in cold blood (when referring to Sainclair), but it is later implied that he executed his former Talon squad mates. However, it should be noted that they were hunting him down to either kill him or bring him in and you don't see his emotions to this act, so he very well could have felt guilt over it.
  • Baptiste's medic armor bears similarities to that of medic armor in StarCraft, most specifically the Tiger's Claw variant.
  • Jean Baptiste was also the name of a french noble during the 18th century who later became the king of Sweden under the name Karl XIV Johan
  • Three healing abilities are able to be amplied via Amplification Matrix: Moira's Biotic Orb, Ana's Biotic Rifle, and Baptiste's own Biotic Launcher. All other healing abilities recieve no change even when passed through the matrix.

Development

  • Baptiste was designed by Michael Chu. As of February 2019, it is intended that his connections with Talon be fleshed out in tie-in media.[6]
  • Haiti was a cornerstone of Baptiste's backstory. According to Chu, "I think it’s meaningful to introduce countries that are less well-known worldwide through Overwatch. Haiti was a colony and has a history of fighting for independence. That is why we paid close attention to portraying Haitian history when we chose the voice actor or during the voice recording process."[6]
  • Gameplay-wise, he was designed to be similar to Soldier: 76 albeit in a support role, including an immunity ability.[6]
  • When Baptiste was put on the PTR, his Immortality Field was able to deploy in out-of-bounds areas. This allowed Baptiste to travel out-of-bounds in Custom Games.
  • Baptiste received several changes before coming live: the visuals for Immortality Field and Amplification Matrix were changed, Immortality Field got an audio indicator, Immortality Field was added to the kill feed, the time it took Immortality Field to go away after the drone was destroyed was shortened, Baptiste's ultimate voice line for himself was switched to English, Friendly Amplification Matrix's color was changed from blue to green, and the option to turn off Automatic Reload was added.

Patch
Description
Baptiste-ability5 Exo Boots
  • Charge time increased from 0.7 to 1 second

Developer Comment: Though it felt better to use, the previous reduction to the Exo Boots charge time resulted in Baptiste becoming much more evasive against some heroes. Since he already has strong defensive ability options in Regenerative Burst and Immortality Field, we're reverting how quickly he can charge the Exo Boots jump.

Baptiste-ability3 Immortality Field
  • Health decreased from 200 to 150

Baptiste-ability4 Amplification Matrix

  • Ultimate cost increased by 15%

Developer Comment: To adjust Baptiste's overall power for the recent increased effectiveness of his Biotic Launcher and Amplification Matrix, we're taking some durability out of Immortality Field and increasing the cost of his ultimate once again.

Baptiste-ability4 Amplification Matrix
  • Width increased from 5 meters to 9 meters

Developer Comment: His Amplification Matrix was sometimes difficult to utilize for his allies without gathering very closely together so we've made it much wider.

Baptiste-ability1 Biotic Launcher
  • Primary Fire
    • Recovery time reduced from 0.45 to 0.38 seconds
  • Secondary Fire
    • Recovery increased from 0.8 to 0.9 seconds
    • Healing increased from 50 to 60

Developer Comment: We're making some adjustments to Baptiste's Biotic Launcher firing cadence that will make dealing damage quicker and landing a healing grenade more impactful.

Baptiste-ability4 Amplification Matrix
  • Ultimate cost decreased by 15%

Developer Comment: Baptiste generates a majority of his ultimate charge through area-of-effect healing. As we reduced area healing values recently, we're also scaling down the cost of his ultimate.

Baptiste-ability1 Biotic Launcher
  • Decreased heal ammo from 12 to 10.

Baptiste-ability2 Regenerative Burst

  • Total healing reduced from 150 to 75
