Benicio is the father of Lúcio and the original inventor of the Sonic Technology that was used to suppress the people of Rio de Janerio by Vishkar and later stolen back by Lúcio.

Not much is known about Benicio other than that he is responsible for the invention of the Sonic Technology and at one point worked for Vishkar who took ownership of his invention. According to Lúcio his father invented Sonic Technology to help the citizens of Rio and make the world a better place[1]. But Vishkar had other intentions. They imposed controls on the residents of Rio in the name of building a more orderly society: enforcing curfews, cracking down on what the company perceived as lawless behavior, and exploiting the populace as a cheap labor force using Sonic Tech as a way to suppress the population. According to Symmetra in a pre-game interaction with Lúcio, Benicio understood Vishkar's vision. This is however never backed up by anyone else besides her.
The Uprising[ | ]
Lúcio wouldn't stand for it and stole back his father's Sonic Technology, so he could convert it into a tool to rally the people of Rio in action. In a popular uprising, Lúcio and his allies drove Vishkar out of their neighborhoods. With that, He'd fulfilled the promise his father had made to them about making the world a better place. In the end, Lúcio doubted that his father would have regretted creating the technology.

Lúcio's Post-Rio journal entry
Rio de Janerio was one of the cities hit by Null Sector's worldwide attacks. With help from Lúcio, the newly formed Overwatch drove the troops out of Rio after they destroyed the command ship. Soon after these events, Lúcio joins Overwatch in an effort to help save the world. Somewhere between the Rio mission and the Toronto mission, Winston receives an email titled "Thank you (From Lúcios dad)". In this email, Benicio expresses his gratitude towards Overwatch for saving Rio and fulfilling his son's dreams of fighting alongside Overwatch. He also states Lúcio knows more than anyone what it's like to be labeled a criminal when trying to fight for what is right. During this time, Lúcio also wrote in his journal about the success in Rio. He details how Benicio used to tell him how he'd become a dancer or fighter when he would grow up, expressing how he showed his dad because he became both after joining Overwatch. In a later journal entry written by Lúcio after the failed mission in Toronto, he states how he should call his dad, but decides not to because he does not want to worry him.
