Cairo was a location pitched as a payload map during development of Overwatch.[1]
Notes[ | ]
The Temple of Anubis was the first map to be created in Overwatch, however, it was first pitched as Cairo. The development team choose the Egypt-based location due to how it lends itself to showing off the game's characters. The direct sunlight of the map allowed the heroes and the map to be viewed in vivid detail. Moreover, the map had strong visual motifs in the Sphinx and the pyramids.[2]
Both featured original artworks are "early ideation[s]" of the Temple of Anubis, and were made by Peter Lee.[2]
- Several design elements from the original concept art were later repurposed and integrated into the map Throne of Anubis.
