Story[ | ]
The Omnic Crisis[ | ]
In the years before the Omnic Crisis, Portugal faced the challenges of climate change and sea level rise. Concerned with the difficult situation of his country, Cláudio Martins returned to his homeland with his husband, the Venezuelan climatologist Hector Martins. Together, they started the construction of the Great Wall using Cláudio's invention, durovidro. However, their plans were interrupted by the Omnic Crisis.[1]
The Great Wall was attacked on the fourth day of the war, but the attacking omnics were annihilated by concentrated fire from the Portuguese Army. As the victory was celebrated, both of the Martinses returned to work, looking for ways to protect their nation from the inevitable second wave. During this period of almost desperate research and testing, Cláudio discovered that durovidro had absorbed beam projectiles, leaving large discolorations swirling deep inside the glass.[2]
In an age where most countries were fighting to protect their own borders, Cláudio managed to convince the Portuguese government to make a defensive alliance with Spain. They would combine the strength of both armies in exchange for the expansion of the Great Wall from the coast of Portugal to the shared coast with Spain, extending it to the Strait of Gibraltar.[1] Greatful for their efforts, the Spanish government gifted the Martinses a military base and research center at Gibraltar.[2]
The Martinses tried to approach neighboring nations with the same deal (expand the Great Wall in exchange for military support), but they found no success. The governments they approached either wanted control of the seawall, or feared an alliance would yoke them to the defense of adjoining countries. They preferred to stand (and all too frequently, die) alone. With only Spain and Portugal accepting their services, the Martinses helped both countries retrofit their seawalls for defensive measures.[2]
Both the Martinses joined Overwatch during the conflict. They were assigned to the group's engineering team, where they worked under engineer Torbjörn Lindholm. Though their efforts were largely limited to armor enhancements and consulting, they saved numerous lives over the course of the war.[2]
Post-Crisis[ | ]
After the conclusion of the Omnic Crisis, Overwatch's charter was expanded. Both of the Martinses remained with the organization. Their old base in Gibraltar fell into disuse as tits staff was gradually thinned, and ultimately, the base was shut down. The Martinses decided to donate the base to Overwatch, where it was named "Watchpoint: Gibraltar."[2]
At some point, the Martinses left Overwatch (it is not clear if this was before its disbandment or because of it) and began work on their next project—the Atlantic Arcology.[2] The arcology had problems with curious whales, but they refused help from Torbjörn Lindholm.[3] Despite the risks, they allowed Niran Pruksamanee to stay on the Arcology.[4]
