Cosmic Crisis

Cosmic Crisis Poster [1]

Cosmic Crisis was a Limited-time event in Overwatch 2, featuring a 4-player co-op game mode of the same name. It was available with the release of Season 9: Champions. The event ran from February 13 to March 12, 2024. [1]

Details[ | ]

This PvE game mode ran on a modified version of Ecopoint: Antarctica, in which players would be led by Sojourn through different objectives to repair their ship, defeat Null Sector and escape.

Gameplay[ | ]

To start, all players would emerge from the crashed ship to battle against what appears to be Null Sector forces. They'd have to either clear patches of snow off the ship, or fire from off the ship. At this point, a random Hero will be contacted by The Ravager to entice them to betray the team.

As you go further into Ecopoint: Antarctica, you find a monstrous cosmic beast called The Ravager, who has taken over the Null Sector units on the sight and is based around the main objective of the map.

There are two separate scenarios on what the heroes would have to do to access the batteries at the other side of the map, but both require them to fight against elite Null Sector units.

  • Scenario 1 (Keycards): Teams would fight against 3 waves of enemies outside the battery room. Each wave has an Elite Jumpjet holding a Keycard, required to move to the next wave. Each wave similarly had a 'main boss'.
  • Scenario 2 (Pylons): Teams would have to go around the map to destroy pylons powering the doors to the facility. Each pylon is defending by a large group of Null Sector units, as well a 'main boss'. These pylons were comprised of normal health and Shields that would immediately regenerate, requiring multiple people to attack a single pylon to destroy it.

Once the batteries were obtained, the team would have to traverse to the other side of the map to put the batteries into the ship. From this point onwards, the 'Betrayer' could jump into the Ravager in the centre of the map to turn against the team and stop them from finishing their mission.

Once the teammates have put all batteries into the ship, they'll need to defend the ship from more waves of Null Sector troops and put in more batteries from the laboratory next to the ship. The Null Sector units attacking the ship include Breachers, who are trying to blow up the ship. This final battle will alter depending on whether there was a betrayal or not:

Betrayal: If the ally chose to betray your team, you will have to fight against them and defend against the troops as normal. If successful, the ship will go into repair and after a short while, you can enter it and leave the site which means the betrayer will fail. If your team is completely knocked down, or the ship destroyed by Breachers, the betrayer will win.
No Betrayal: If the ally chose not to betray your team, then you will have to fight off against a Void Cultist (Cultist Zenyatta) and Null Servant (C-455 Sharpshooter Cassidy), who both had very high hit points. If you manage to successfully defend the ship, you can all board to win the mission, without having to defeat the Cultist or Servant.

Modifiers[ | ]

To "change up gameplay"[1], different game modifiers were added weekly to give players more reason to play the game mode again, requiring them to win on these modifiers for challenges. 3 modifiers were introduced, each released 1 week apart from each other. The first was released February 20th, 2023.

  • Death from Above: Artillery strikes from above would target and drop on players.
  • Molten Core: Null Sector will drop pools of lava when destroyed.
  • Thunderstorm : Players would be damaged if they got too close to Null Sector.

Heroes[ | ]

During this game mode, hero selection was restricted to the following heroes for each role. Each hero would have an eldritch-themed skin equipped for this game mode.

Hero Selection[ | ]

During the hero select, Sojourn said different lines depending on the hero picked, to give some minor backstory to each Hero, their motives for betrayal, or their purpose.

Hero Hero Select Voiceline
Roadhog "Roadhog. Well, it takes a monster to tear apart monsters, doesn't it?"
Sigma "Sigma. Don't let the darkness pull you in deeper. We need you on our side."
Mei "Mei. I hope you can handle coming back here. Talk to the team if you start feeling out of control."
Soldier: 76 "Soldier: 76. Whatever deal you've struck, set it aside. You can still be a hero."
Torbjörn "Torbjörn. Are you still in there? We need your best weapons to take out these null monsters."
Widowmaker "Widowmaker. Think you can use that cosmic sight for good this time?"
Ana "Ana. Stay focused. Vengeance gave you this power, but you can't let it consume you."
Illari "Illari. I know your old team fell to the void. Don't let it take this one too."
Lifeweaver "Lifeweaver. Your visions brought the team here. I hope you know what you're doing."
Moira "Moira. Prioritize our people, not your cosmic experiments. That's an order."

Trivia[ | ]

  • There was a bug where so long as you prevent one of the Breacher's from reaching the ship without destroying it (such as body blocking one), the ship would eventually go into repair, letting you board to complete the mission. In this scenario, even if the breacher reached the ship later it wouldn't end the game.
  • The Ravager is voiced by Ramattra's voice actor, Ramon Tikaram. The character lacks a physical model in the form of a cosmetic, but there are enough similarities to suggest that the Ravager is supposed to be a cosmic twist on Ramattra.
