  • Reaper's legendary Anniversary skin "Masquerade" is a reference to the story The Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allan Poe[2] and The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux.[3] The guns on the skin have a quote from the 1925 The Phantom of the Opera movie etched into the wood, "Beneath your dancing feet are the tombs of tortured men!" Reaper wore this outfit in the official Overwatch comic Masquerade, which bears some similarities to The Masque of the Red Death story. The featured quote when viewing the skin is from the end of The Masque of the Red Death story, "There are chords in the hearts of the most reckless which cannot be touched without emotion. Even with the utterly lost, to whom life and death are equally jests, there are matters of which no jest can be made."
  • Reaper's skin "Nevermore" is an obvious reference to The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe.[4]
  • Soldier: 76's Halloween voice line "Dying's not much of a living" is a reference to the song Dyin' Ain't Much Of A Livin' by Jon Bon Jovi.
  • Soldier: 76's skin-specific respawn line when using Stunt Rider: 76 and Daredevil: 76 "Bones heal, pain is temporary, and scars look good" is a reference to a quote by stunt rider Evel Knievel: "Bones heal, pain is temporary, and chicks dig scars."
  • The skin-specific respawn line for Soldier: 76's Stunt Rider: 76 and Daredevil: 76 skins "Sic transit gloria" is likely a reference to the Latin phrase "Sic transit gloria mundi". It translates to "Thus passes the glory of the world" and has been interpreted as "Worldly things are fleeting."
  • The Soldier: 76 voice line "Old soldiers never die... And they don't fade away..." is a revised quote from U.S. General Douglas MacArthur in a farewell speech delivered April 19th, 1951. The original quote is "Old soldiers never die; they just fade away."
  • Soldier: 76's epic Halloween skin "Immortal" is possibly a reference to the outfit worn by Michael Jackson in his Thriller music video.
  • If playing with multiple Soldier: 76's run by AI, the game will start to name them "Soldier 77," "Soldier 78," and so on.
  • Symmetra's animation when she creates her photon barrier has her making a "frame" with her fingers, then expanding it to enlarge the wall. This is very similar to the way Jade Harley, in the popular webcomic Homestuck, uses her powers.
  • Torbjörn's voice line "Some assembly required". Is a reference to the Swedish furniture store Ikea's products always having to be made from scratch. This reference also appears in his "Uppgradera" & "Kanon" Sprays, which mimic the style of Ikea's instruction manuals for assembling Ikea products.
  • Torbjörn's line "Completion date? *laugh* When it's done," references Blizzard's history of not giving release dates early in a game's development.
  • Tracer can be heard saying "Keep calm and Tracer on" - a parody on the Carry On poster designed for WWII.
  • Widowmaker's voice line "Let them eat cake" is a reference to a quote famously misattributed to Marie-Antoinette, the last Queen of France prior to the French Revolution; In truth, however, Marie Antoinette said no such thing, and was actually quite well-informed of the situations that led to her death.
  • Zarya's Summer Games voice line "It's only a game, why do you have to be mad?" is a reference to a 2007 interview with Russian ice hockey goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov, in response to a Canadian journalist's question regarding a controversial player transfer.
  • Zarya's voice line "In Russia, game plays you" is referencing a meme popularized by comedian Yakov Smirnoff in the 1980s.
  • Zenyatta's voice line "Hello world!" is a reference to the tradition of example computer programs that print "hello world", started by the BASIC programming language.
  • Zenyatta's name, when paired with that of Tekhartha Mondatta, may be a reference to the album Zenyatta Mondatta by rock band The Police.
  • Zenyatta's voice line: "I dreamt I was a butterfly" is a reference to Zhuangzi’s Butterfly Dream.
  • Zenyatta's line "I think, therefore I am" is the English translation of "Cogito ergo sum": a famous philosophical proposition by French philosopher René Descartes.
  • The spray "Jail" has the caption "GO DIRECTLY TO JAIL." This is a reference to the popular board game Monopoly.
