Egypt is a country located in northern Africa.

History

Egypt was a battlefield during the Omnic Crisis. As the conflict inflicted a heavy toll on the country, Egypt's depleted and undermanned security forces relied on elite snipers for support.[1]

Egypt

Poverty in Egypt

Ten years before the present day, Overwatch shut down the Anubis project, which had an adverse effect on the country, including Cairo.[2]

Seven years before the present day, Director Petras ordered a full investigation into the murder of an Overwatch official in Cairo. Sometime before this, Egypt was the site of a humanitarian crisis that Dr. Ziegler stated Overwatch didn't have the resources to deal with again.[3]

In the present day, poverty is an issue within the nation.[4] Even ten years after the shutdown of Anubis, Egypt has been left with crumbling infrastructure.[5] People's lives are hard, and the country suffered the effects of organized crime via individuals such as Abdul Hakim. Hakim himself paid off the government and police to turn a blind eye to his operations.[2] However, the country was able to make some strides to recovery, with the development of agritech along the Nile, and a combination of solar power and battery storage ensuring that Egypt had more electricity than it knew what to do with.[5]

After returning to the country, Ana Amari was of the opinion that Egypt was a failing state, and would fall into chaos in a few years, torn apart by profiteers and criminals. However, Ana and Jack Morrison were able to disband Hakim's criminal network, and Egyptian media reported on an individual named "Bastet" (Amari's vigilante persona) capturing Hakim himself. Thus, the government was forced to act.[2]
