Environmental kill

An environmental kill is when a hero falls off the map after being applied a Crowd Control (CC) effect (typically stuns or knock backs). Only 1 hero can be awarded an environmental kill per kill, and if there are multiple CC effects, only the last one applied counts. Environmental kills count as doing damage equal to the victim's HP at the time of death.

Strategies to achieve environmental kills include:

1. Positioning: Utilize heroes with CC effects near ledges or other environmental hazards to catch opponents off guard.
2. Timing: Syncing your abilities with your team's crowd control effects can maximize the chances of securing an environmental kill.
3. Map Awareness: Familiarize yourself with the maps and the locations where environmental kills are most likely to occur.
4. Hero Selection: Choose heroes like Lucio, Pharah, or Winston, known for their knock-back abilities, when playing on maps with environmental hazards.
5. Combination with Ults: Combining crowd control effects with ultimates like Orisa's Terra Surge or Zarya's Graviton Surge can be lethal near ledges.

Counterplay to avoid these are:

1. Positioning Awareness: Stay away from areas where you can be easily knocked off, especially when facing heroes with strong knock-back abilities.
2. Utilize Shields and Barriers: Heroes like Reinhardt or Ramattra can use their shields to block incoming CC effects that lead to environmental kills.
3. Pick Mobility Heroes: Heroes with high mobility like Tracer, Genji, or D.Va can evade or recover from knock-back effects. Kiriko's Swift Step is also an excellent counter to environmental kills, allowing her to teleport to an ally if one is within range.
4. Communication with Teammates: Coordinate with your team to keep track of enemy abilities that could lead to environmental kills and plan accordingly.

• Environmental kills are weighted significantly more than regular kills for Play of the Game.
• Mauga's Cage Fight can technically earn Environmental kills by dragging trapped players off the map, however this doesn't award Mauga the elimination like Orisa's Terra Surge does.
