Ilios is a Control map in Overwatch.
Background
Ilios is located in the Aegean sea of Greece, which is part of the Mediterranean Sea.[1]
Situated atop a small island rising from the Aegean Sea, Ilios is a postcard-perfect Mediterranean town, with a bustling harborside, winding paths for rambling hillside strolls, and gorgeous vistas. It is the ideal vacation stop for people looking for a place to relax, or for those interested in exploring the ruins scattered at the top of the island, where many artifacts and relics of the ancient world have been recently unearthed. The ruins were declared an internationally protected heritage site. However, Talon attempted to steal the artifacts.[2]
Gameplay
- This section is a stub section. You can help by adding any available information to this section.
Each turn is played on one of the three sections of the map:
- Lighthouse
- Ruins
- Well
Strategy
- This section is a stub section. You can help by adding any available information to this section.
On the Well section of the map, the big hole in the middle of the control point can be used to score easy eliminations, especially on durable heroes such as Roadhog or Reinhardt. Abilities capable of doing that include:
- Ashe's Coach Gun has knockback.
- Brigitte's Whip Shot has knockback.
- D.Va's Boosters can push enemies by colliding withthem mid-flight.
- Doomfist's Rocket Punch and Rising Uppercut both have knockback.
- Junkrat's Concussion Mine has knockback.
- Lúcio's Soundwave has knockback.
- Orisa's Halt! can pull enemies into the hole if they stand too close to it.
- Pharah's Concussive Blast has knockback.
- Reinhardt's Charge can push enemies down the well, though Reinhardt will often get himself trapped in the well too.
- Roadhog's Chain Hook can pull enemies towards the well; Roadhog can turn slightly to angle enemies into the well if it's to his side rather than directly in front of him.
- Sigma's Accretion can knock enemies into the hole if they stand too close to it.
- Winston's melee attack during Primal Rage has knockback, and he also has light knockback when landing with Jump Pack
- Wrecking Ball's Grappling Claw has knockback when ramming into an enemy at top speed.
- Zarya's Graviton Surge can grab enemies above the well before dropping them in.
Some heroes, however, have ways of escaping from the well:
- Ashe can aim her Coach Gun beneath her and use its recoil to get back to the surface if used quickly enough.
- D.Va can pull herself out using Boosters.
- Doomfist can use Rising Uppercut to gain some height and escape the well.
- Genji can use his Swift Strike and Cyber-Agility, either by jumping out of the well or climbing up its walls.
- Hanzo can Leap towards the walls of the well and then Wall Climb to climb out.
- Lúcio can Wall Ride around the well provided he's close enough to its walls.
- Mercy can pull herself to an ally using Guardian Angel.
- Pharah can use Jump Jet to launch herself upwards and escape the well.
- Reaper can use Shadow Step to teleport back up to the ledge, if done quick enough.
- Sombra can use her Translocator.
- Tracer can Recall back to the surface.
- Widowmaker can use her Grappling Hook.
- Winston can use his Jump Pack to escape.
- Wrecking Ball can use Grappling Claw to hang on to the ledge and swing himself back up.
Trivia
- In Greek, ήλιος (pronounced ilios) means sun.
- The style of the houses and buildings in the map is possibly following cycladic architecture. The brilliant white color comes from the use of lime as the building material.
- Ilios was an alternate name for the ancient city of Troy that was used in Homer's epic poem, 'The Iliad.'
- Ilios is a real world location, based in Santorini island, east of Santorini - Irida.[3]
- The big statue which can be faintly seen in the distance is a reference to the Colossus Of Rhodes, which portrayed Helios or Ilios, and was one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world.
- In Titan, reference was made to "raising Atlantis" within the game's lore.[4] The idea of artifacts being unearthed in a Greek location bears resemblance to this concept.
- In Legacy, a billboard advertising tourism to Ilios can be seen.
