Junkenstein's Laboratory was a limited-time Halloween Terror game mode first introduced in Season 13: Spellbinder. In this PvP game mode, players could pick “mutations”, which varied from Common to Legendary. These mutations could affect the hero, or the entire team. The game mode ran from October 15 to November 4, 2024. [1] On November 3, it was announced that the gamemode would last until November 11.

Gameplay[]

This game mode was a Team Deathmatch, played on various Control maps. Instead of a usual maximum 3-round game, this game mode can have a maximum of 5 rounds. To claim victory, a team must win 3 rounds overall. Due to this, certain Control maps will be reused and could be played twice in a match.

This game mode ran on a typical team format: 1 Tank, 2 Damage, 2 Support. When queueing, players could choose which role(s) they queued for, but the hero selection of the game mode was restricted to 12 Heroes. Additionally, players couldn't change heroes throughout the duration of a match: the button to change heroes in spawn instead redirected players to their page of hero mutations.

There were other slight changes in this game mode compared to a normal Team Deathmatch. 'The Narrator', who usually narrates the story of other halloween Terror game modes such as Junkenstein's Revenge, replaced Athena during this game mode. During which, instead of Play of the Game he says, “Slay of the Game”.

Throughout the game, players picked mutations to improve their kit in various ways, unique for each hero. Players started with 2 mutations, each round gaining 1 for a maximum of 6 mutations. This meant each game would be different in slight ways, with hundreds of combinations for hero mutations.

During this game mode, the hero selection pool was limited to only 12 heroes: 3 Tanks, 5 Damage and 4 Support. These heroes were pre-equipped with Halloween-themed skins, as listed below.

The mutations are divided into four 'rarities' of 4 colors: Common, Uncommon, Rare and Legendary.[2] These rarities can also be indicated by the number of pumpkins on the mutation card, from 1 to 4 (common to legendary).

Players started by picking 2 mutations, and each round could gain 1 additional mutation. They could also discard a previous mutation for a new one, if they wanted. After a maximum of 5 games, a player could have at most 6 mutations. In the mutations page, players could see their mutations, their teammates mutations and even the enemy's mutations. These were also visible after being eliminated, whilst spectating your teammates in a collapsible tab on the right of the screen.

  • No Escape: Fusion Cannons' spread is significantly reduced but the rate of fire is slowed. Weapon Damage is increased by 100%
  • Vampiric Booster[3]: Booster impacts grant 25 Armor for 5 seconds
Legendary
  • Anti-Boost[5]: Enemies hit by Boosters receive a debuff that prevents healing for 1.5 seconds
  • Beast's Hunger[4]: Gain 10% of damage blocked by Defense Matrix as ultimate charge
  • Cornered Fox: Attack speed and damage are increased up to 30% based on missing health
  • Repulsive Missiles: Micro Missiles deal 15% increased damage with strong knockback and 25% increased explosion radius
  • Self-Destruct Siphon: Self-Destruct pulls in nearby enemies for 2 seconds but increases detonation time by 30%

  • Demonic Fury: Attack speed and damage are increased up to 25% based on missing health
  • Monster Bash: Gain Shield Bash. With Barrier Field active, use Quick Melee to damage and stun nearby enemies. 8 second cooldown
  • Spectral Shield: Barrier Field is active during Charge. Increase knockback by 25% and knockback damage by 100%

  • Ghastly Spurs: Increases movement speed by 25% for 3 seconds after using the Coach gun
  • Headhunter: Hip Fire Shots increase the damage of the next Aim-Down-Sights shot by 10%, up to a maximum of 100%. Resets on reload
  • Hocus Pocus: Shooting Dynamite reloads 3 bullets and reduces Dynamite's cooldown by 5 seconds

  • Brimstone[2]: Deals mini crits to burning enemies

  • Creepy Combustion: After firing Coach Gun, The Viper reloads 2 bullets. The Viper's next 2 shots deal 50 burn damage over 2.5 seconds
  • Fractured Fire: Dynamite explodes into three smaller Dynamites
  • Ritual Grounds[3]: If Dynamite explodes on the ground it creates a burning area that damages enemies
  • Viper's Obsession: When The Viper hits the same target, deal 20% more damage
Legendary
  • Chain Reaction[4]: If a target dies while burning, it causes another Dynamite explosion
  • Demon's Ward: When B.O.B. stops, he activates Winston's shield around him
  • Fire and Fury[5]: The Viper's shots on burning targets reduce the cooldowns of Coach Gun and Dynamite by 5%.
  • Second Soul: If Ashe receives lethal damage while B.O.B. is active, B.O.B. is destroyed and Ashe becomes unkillable for 3 seconds
  • Soul Siphon: Critical hits automatically refill one bullet in the magazine

  • Counter Spell: Deflect duration is increased by 1.50s
  • Dark Ambush: Deal 15% more damage to enemies struck from behind
  • Eerie Escape: Swift Strike cooldown is reduced by 40% if it deals no damage
  • Scary Speed[1]: Shuriken critical hits increase attack speed by 2%, up to 15 stacks, for 10 seconds
  • Vicious Cycle: Swift Strike grants 3 ammo per enemy damaged

  • Death's Grasp: Dealing damage with Swift Strike will cause the next Quick Melee to fire a piercing projectile that deals 100% Quick Melee damage
  • Karma: Deflected projectiles deal 25% increased damage
  • Leery Leap[2]: Double Jump can be used a second time while airborne. Movement speed increased by 15%
  • Spectral Smoke: When taking fatal damage, activate a smoke bomb to gain invisibility and unkillable for 3 seconds. Can only use 1x per round
  • Vampiric Deflect[1]: Deflect heals for 10% of your max health per second
Rare
  • Bitter Revenge[3]: Deflect causes the next Swift Strike to deal up to 50% more damage within 8 seconds based on the damage prevented
  • Dreadful Dragon: Dragonblade's first 3 hits increases attack speed for 15% each and increases duration for 1.50s
  • Sanguine Strike: Swift Strike can deflect projectiles and will wound the first enemy hit for 75 HP in 3 seconds
  • Swarming Shurikens: Swift Strike hits will cause the next 3 Shuriken Primary Fire projectiles to seek enemies
  • Twisted Power: While Deflect is active, press Primary Fire to briefly make any projectile deflectred deal 150% more damage
Legendary
  • Dragon's Breath[5]: Dragonblade attacks also fire a large piercing projectile, dealing 100% of its damage
  • Master Ward: Deflect now protects from all directions. Cooldown is increased by 5 seconds
  • Scary Strikes: Swift Strike gains 1 additional charge, but with a 30% longer cooldown that can't be reset by eliminations
  • Shuriken Storm: Deflect launches a homing Shuriken to the attacker after deflecting a projectile, which will deal 50% Shuriken damage
  • Unfinished Business[4]: Dealing 200 damage with Primary Fire causes the next use of Secondary Fire to launch 9 Shurikens that mini-crit

  • Defense of the Damned: Biotic Field grants 75 Shield to all allies while the Biotic Field is active
  • Immolation[2]: Helix Rocket Damage applies Burn, dealing 60 Damage over 6 seconds
  • Spectral Sprint: After sprinting for 3.00s, ammo is reloaded automatically
  • Tell-Tale Heartbeat: Biotic Field pulses every 1.0s damaging enemies in its area. The first pulse knocks back enemies
Rare
  • Consecutive Carnage: While holding Primary Fire, Heavy Pulse Rifle deals an extra 2% of base damage for every bullet that hits an enemy. Using Helix Rockets will not interrupt this effect
  • Hindered Horror: Direct hits with Helix Rockets slow the target by 35% for 3 seconds
  • On the Hunt: While sprinting, become unstoppable and reduce damage by 30%
  • Portable Potion[3]: Biotic Field moves with you and provides 10% more health
  • You Can Run...: While Tactical Visor is active, reveal all enemies behind walls
Legendary
  • Endless Night[5]: Eliminations or assists while Tactical Visor is active increases the duration of Tactical Visor by 3 seconds
  • Hide and Heat Seek: Helix Rockets attempt to home towards the target closest to Soldier: 76's reticle
  • Pain For Gain: Direct hits with Helix Rockets create a Biotic Field at your position
  • Potent Potion[4]: Biotic Field's duration is increased by 200%
  • Scary Surprise: Every 15 bullets fired from Heavy Pulse Rifle during Tactical Visor also launches a Helix Rocket

  • Vindictive Vision: Damaging enemies farther than 12 meters reveals them for 3 seconds

  • Catastrophic Kunai[3]: Kunai explodes on impact, dealing 20% damage in an area
  • Self-Realization: Protection Suzu heals Kiriko for extra 80 health and grants 25% movement speed for 2 seconds
  • Spirit World's Gift: Kitsune Rush heals allies by 75 health per second
  • String of Fate: Teleport distance is increased by 100%
  • The Chariot: Healing Ofuda gives allies 20% increased attack speed for 1.5 seconds on heal

  • Life Line[4]: Swift Step gives 100 overhealth for 15 seconds
  • Spirit Veil: Kitsune Rush cast makes Kiriko invulnerable for 3 seconds and cleansed of negative effects
  • The Star: Protection Suzu lasts 200% longer and grants 15% attack speed and 30% movement speed
  • The Wheel of Fortune: Casting Healing Ofuda heals Kiriko for 5% of max health

  • Dire Need: Increase all healing done to targets below 50% health by 25%
  • Fall From Grace: While using Angelic Descent, movement speed is increased by 15%
  • Lingering Spell: Caduceus Staff's previous healing beam targets continue to heal for up to 50 health, based on how long they were attached
  • Wicked Opportunist: Guardian angel's cooldown is reduced by 30%
  • Witch's Brew[1]: Increase all healing done by 10%
Uncommon
  • Death From Above: While in the air, gain 10% increased damage and 15% increased attack speed
  • Double, Double[1]: Caduceus Staff's healing beam links to a second nearby ally for 25% of its effect
  • Omnipresent: Guardian Angel's range is increased by 50%
  • Toil and Trouble[2]: Caduceus Staff's damage boost links to a second nearby ally for 40% of its effect
  • Witch's Broom: Valkyrie's duration is increased by 25%
Rare
  • Beyond the Grave[3]: Resurrect range is increased by 5m
  • Mend and Mar: Mercy heals all allies within 20 meters for 100% of the damage she deals. This effect increases to 200% while Valkyrie is active
  • Power for a Price: Caduceus Staff's damage boost heals attached targets for 8% of their damage dealt to enemies
  • Sustained Servant: Press Reload to deal a burst 100 heal for your current staff target (heal and buff). 10s cooldown
  • Undying Resolve: Gives 35% Max Health as Overhealth to resurrected player.
Legendary
  • A Favor Honored[5]: Whenever Mercy or her allies use an Ultimate, Mercy instantly heals all allies for 60^ of Mercy's Max Health
  • Everlasting: Mercy is Invulnerable while using Resurrect
  • Spark of Life[4]: Allies attached to Caduceus Staff's damage boost have their cooldowns recharge 35% faster
  • Witches Never Die: Gains a 300 health Barrier Projector upon activating Valkyrie
  • Witch's Pact: Resurrect can be cast on living allies. If the ally dies within 10 seconds, they will be automatically revived

  • Phantom Fade: Fade lasts 1.50 seconds longer
  • Screaming Cyclone: Coalescence grants free flight while active. Ultimate requirement is decreased by 5%
  • Waning Vitality: Secondary Fire reduces the damage of its targets by 5% each second up to 25%
Legendary
  • Banshee's Howl: While using Coalescence, Moira can hold Primary Fire or Secondary Fire to make the beam purely healing or damaging, with 50% greater effectiveness
  • Doppelgangers[4]: Biotic Orb now shoots 3 orbs in a spread. The two additional orbs each have 50% less capacity
  • Equilibrium: While using healing Biotic Grasp, holding down Secondary Fire increases healing by 200% but reduces movement speed by 30%
  • Fading Breath[5]: When Moira Fades, spawn a stationary version of the most recently used Biotic Orb
  • Hastened Horror: The healing Biotic Orb increases ally's attack speed by 15% and movement speed by 20%

  • Shattered Soul: When shields are depleted, release an energy pulse that knocks back enemies, and increase your movement speed for 20% for 5 seconds
  • Spectral Guardian: Using either Ability 1 or 2 while charging secondary fire places a Harmony or Discord Orb on allies and enemies in a frontal cone that lasts 10s
  • Unknown Horror[4]: Transcendence also applies Discord's debuff to nearby enemies

Trivia[]

  • Junkenstein's Laboratory might've been a direct teaser for Stadium.
    • The mutation system was split into powers and items: powers are permanent and change the hero's playstyle, while items can be sold and provide statistical buffs with optional side effects.
    • Like Junkenstein's Laboratory, Stadium features round-based gameplay where instead of switching heroes the players counter by building them up.
