On Fire is a visual gameplay element in Overwatch and Overwatch 2, meant for highlighting players that perform well. It does not grant any gameplay advantages.
Gameplay[ | ]
A player's "Fire" state is an indication of how well they were performing with a hero. Once the player gains enough Fire, they will become "On Fire," and the hero's character portrait gains a flaming halo. A player being On Fire is also displayed on the scoreboards as well as in the Elimination Feed.
Players can gain Fire not only by scoring eliminations and dealing damage, but Fire also comes from mitigated damage, saves, healing, assists, capturing/contesting objectives, boosted damage, and crowd control. Killing players that are On Fire grants more Fire. Fire gradually decreases over time.
In Overwatch 2, if a player is performing exceptionally well, they can reach a higher state of On Fire known as "Blazing", visualized by even stronger flames. Blazing state is harder to maintain than regular On Fire, so you'll need outstanding play to keep the heat on.
Trivia[ | ]
- On Fire was not part of the initial release of Overwatch 2 and was reintroduced in Season 5.
- One of the reasons stated for the removal was that all UI elements had to be completely remade for the new game engine.
- Voicelines were still in game, even for the new heroes that were released in Overwatch 2.
- In Overwatch, the player's fire state was visualized by an On Fire meter underneath their health meter.
- On Fire status was also shown on the team summary screen shown during matches. Time spent on fire was a measured stat, and could get you an end-game card for MVP.
