Overwatch: Classic is a series of limited-time events in Overwatch 2. Beginning with Season 13: Spellbinder, this event features a limited-time game mode styled around the certain time periods of the original Overwatch, featuring 6v6 and a return of old abilities.[1]
Details
The gamemode will bring the player back to Patch 1.0 of Overwatch 1, featuring the 21 original heroes that were available on the game's release, along with long lost abilities such as Mercy's Team resurrection or Torbjörn's level 1 and 2 turrets, and will return Symmetra to the Support role.
There will be multiple Overwatch: Classic events running, with each being a newer patch than the previous one. The player will be able to revisit, among other things, the first version of Overwatch from 2016, 2017's Moth meta, and the infamous GOATS team composition.
Gameplay
The game mode is played on the original 12 launch maps from Overwatch. This includes Assault maps that were removed from Quick Play in Overwatch 2.
However, the maps aren't as they were during the 1.0 Patch, they instead featured any changes and reworks done in Overwatch 2. This is also true for things such as match timing and how elevators function.
These maps include:
Heroes
The game mode will feature the original 21 heroes featured on release of Overwatch 1, along with how their abilities were back then.
To keep to the classic Overwatch feel, all heroes during the mode were automatically equipped with their original Overwatch 1 skins, not allowing players to change them. Also, the original Overwatch 1 Heroic Highlight intros were used during hero selection and the original hero icons replaced the Overwatch 2 icons in the Elimination Feed, during hero selection, and in other areas during of the game mode.
On release, Heroes were split into one of four roles: Tank, Offense, Defense and Support. During hero selection, the heroes were once again split into these roles, with the Defense role icon (
) being displayed for Defense heroes.
Notable Hero Differences:
- Quick Melee again deals 30 damage.
- All hero Health Pools are reverted to how they were on release.
- The global projectile changes from the Season 9 Patch aren't applied.
- No longer swapping your hero hides your selection on the enemy scoreboard for 15 seconds.
- Revert Ultimate Charge to depleting over a short period of time.
Tank
All tanks have lower HP Pools, as they did in the original game.
- Fusion Cannons reduce movement speed by 75% and are interrupted when using Boosters.
- Boosters will get interrupted while firing Fusion Cannons or using Quick Melee.

- Lúcio cannot jump from wall to wall using Wall Ride.

The original hero icons replaced the Overwatch 2 icons in the Elimination Feed, during hero selection, and in other areas during of the game mode.
In October 2020, Heroes were split into one of three roles: Tank, Damage and Support. And has been set with Role Queue.
Below are the things that changed. If not listed, it means no changes have been made since the previous patch. Heroes added in this version are compared to their Overwatch 2 counterparts.
- Quick Melee again deals 30 damage.
- All hero Health Pools are reverted to how they were in the October 2020 Patch.
- The global projectile changes from the Season 9 Patch aren't applied.
Tank
All tanks have lower HP Pools, as they did in the original game.

Reception[]
Classic was the third most popular mode in Overwatch 2 during Season 15 according to time played. In this period, there was a 3:1 ratio of players choosing Competitive 5v5 over Competitive 6v6.[2]
Trivia[]
- During the mode, certain ability call-outs weren't correctly tuned to how it was during Overwatch 1. For example, some heroes, such as Symmetra and Mercy, when announcing their ultimate charge would use the Overwatch 2 voice lines that say the wrong ultimate.
- The heroes were still built on top of their Overwatch 2 counterparts. They still say their OW2 voice lines sometimes. Bastion often uses his Reconfigure voice lines despite them not being present in Overwatch 1, and when Orisa uses her ultimate she says her newer ultimate voice line instead of her old one in the 2017 patch.
- When Symmetra used Photon Shield on allies, heroes automatically thanked her.
- When allies collected Torbjörn's Armor Packs, heroes automatically thanked him.
- Overwatch: Classic temporarily brought the Assault mode back to Unranked.
- For some reason, Ashe makes her appearance in the September 2018 Patch, despite being introduced later in November that year.
