Development[ | ]
Blizzard Entertainment began collaborating with Hasbro to bring Transformers into Overwatch 2 in 2022. It was released in Season 11 due to the season's Tokusatsu theme. From the outset, it was decided that Optimus Prime would be Reinhardt and Megatron would be Ramattra, but multiple other characters were also pitched. These included a Starscream skin for Pharah, a Soundwave skin for Lucio, and a Unicron skin for Wrecking Ball. Dion Rogers has mentioned his desire to implement Grimlock and Dinbot characters. However, there was only so much time to implement the skins, so the developers went with what players would expect to see in such a collaboration (e.g. implementing Bumblebee for Bastion rather than Unicron).[2]
While Optimus wields an axe in some continuities, the developers had Reinhardt keep his hammer, as they needed familiar Overwatch elements to stay consistent. There was an idea for Optimus Reinhardt to change into his truck form when charging, but the idea was dropped.[2]
Ramattra was chosen as Megatron as both characters have transformation abilities, and that like Megatron, Ramattra is the 'big bad' of the Overwatch universe.[2]
Bumblebee was chosen to be Bastion as both characters are (mostly) silent in their respective IPs.[2]
Illari was chosen to be Arcee as at the time, Illari hadn't received many skins. Arcee was chosen as she is one of Rogers's favorite characters in Transformers, and while Illari herself doesn't transform, her solar rifle does, which harkened back to Cybertronians' transformation abilities in Rogers's mind.[2]
The developers have not ruled out doing another Transformers collaboration in the future, given the number of characters that can be taken from the IP.[2]
