Development[]

OW2 Blizzcon 2019 Concept Rio

Concept Art 'Rio' (Blizzcon 2019)

  • The map was initially named "Rio" when it was first announced at BlizzCon 2019. By June 2022, the map's name had been changed to "Paraíso." It first became playable in the Overwatch 2 (June 18, 2022) beta.[1]
  • "Paraíso" is portuguese for "Paradise" or "Heaven".
  • The last spawn room of the defense team has a closed room that resembles the main location of "El Chavo del Ocho", a popular Mexican sitcom. In the BlizzCon 2019 version, it included a barrel and a red tricycle as a nod to the protagonist of the sitcom.
  • The surroundings of the Attacker's spawn is loosely based on the Copacabana Beach.
  • In the distance from the Attacker's spawn one can see the Christ the Redeemer Statue, the main landmark of Rio de Janeiro.
    • However the real statue (and its hills) are located much more inwards in its real location as opposed to the bay of Copacabana.
