History

The Great Wall

In the years before the Omnic Crisis, Portugal faced the challenges of climate change, including sea level rise. To offset this, Portuguese inventor Cláudio Martins, working with climatologist Hector Martins, began construction of the Great Wall along Portugal's coastline.

Unlike many countries, Portugal had neither omniums nor a sizable omnic labor pool. This was regarded as a national disadvantage prior to the Omnic Crisis, but when the war began, this worked out in Portugal's favor, as it was effectively granted several days to prepare for the approaching combat. On the fourth day of the war, however, Anubis's forces approached the Portuguese mainland by both land and sea, in what should have been a quick and decisive victory for the omnics. However, the attack turned into a rout; the Portuguese Army mobilized to the Great Wall, where they maintained a fearless and powerful defense against the forces of Anubis. The attacking omnics were annihilated by concentrated fire, and a relieved population celebrated their victory.

In an age where most countries were fighting to protect their own borders, Cláudio managed to convince the Portuguese government to make a defensive alliance with Spain. They would combine the strength of both armies in exchange for the expansion of the Great Wall from the coast of Portugal to the shared coast with Spain, extending it to the Strait of Gibraltar. The combined Portuguese and Spanish forces held Anubis's armies at bay for a year, with only minimal casualties. Afterwards, Anubis never attempted a subsequent amphibious assault on either country.
