Strategy

Strength

Reaper is a short-ranged flanker and one of the deadliest heroes in the game up close, with even Tanks like Reinhardt and Roadhog melting under the power of his Hellfire Shotguns. Wraith Form is one of the greatest invulnerability tools in the game; Reaper can use it to escape or chase his enemies thanks to his increased speed and immediate reload. Shadow Step is another flanking ability; provided enough time to set it up, he can use it to move to any location within his line-of-sight. When the main fight begins, Death Blossom can turn the tide of battle when using it in the middle of the fight. Its high constant damage can tear most heroes to shreds if they are not prepared. Reaper's relative simplicity makes him a good hero for new players, while still remaining deadly in experienced hands.

Weakness

Reaper lacks in-combat mobility, as his Wraith Form is mainly used to save his life and escape from near-death situations, and Shadow Step is very loud and makes Reaper unable to move for a while, so he becomes easy prey if spotted. Reaper works best in close-combat and is nearly useless in fighting at mid- to- long range due to quick damage falloff and the large spread of his weapon. Death Blossom is easy to shut down by stunning Reaper or blocking it with a friendly barrier. Reaper is most effective in a team composition or a map that keeps the fight in close-quarters.

Weapons & Abilities

  • Ability-reaper5 The Reaping (Passive): Reaper's sustain ability. As Reaper damages his foes, he receives a portion of the damage he deals back as Health.
    • This provides Reaper with a steady stream of healing, so long as he's in combat. This can help him to survive for long periods of time in areas without many Health Packs.
    • This can provide Reaper with valuable in-combat healing. If up against multiple opponents, aim to damage the targets with the highest Health to maintain your own Health.
  • Ability-reaper1 Hellfire Shotguns: Reaper's primary weapon. The primary fire will cause Reaper to alternate shooting his two shotguns, with no secondary fire mode. These shotguns have a wide spread and deal high damage at short range, but have high damage falloff past that range.
    • Hellfire Shotguns deal extremely high damage at short range, allowing Reaper to quickly kill targets that he gets the jump on, especially Tanks with large hitboxes which allows most of the pellets to connect.
    • As the shotguns have high damage falloff and a wide spread, aim to get up close to your enemies so that you can deal the most damage possible.
  • Ability-reaper2 Wraith Form: When activated, Reaper assumes a gaseous purple form for a short period of time. While in this form, he is invincible and untargetable by any enemy weapons or abilities and ignores enemy collision. He also moves faster for the duration. However, he cannot attack or use any abilities during this time.
    • This is Reaper's main method of escape. If you suddenly find yourself surrounded by enemies, activate Wraith Form and make a break for the safest location you can find. Offensively, it can also be used to chase down enemies due to the speed increase.
    • When timed properly, Reaper can avoid potentially deadly attacks with this ability, such as Roadhog's Chain Hook, Reinhardt's Charge, or Cassidy's Flashbang. Try to anticipate your enemy's attacks and use Wraith Form before they hit.
    • Using Wraith Form will remove Zenyatta's Orb Of Discord as well as Tracer's Pulse Bomb. It will also remove the effect of Ana's Biotic Grenade and Widowmaker's Venom Mine.
    • Try luring the enemy to waste some strong attack by staying close to them and using Wraith Form to avoid it, such as Roadhog's Hook or Cassidy's Flashbang. Once they lose it, cancel Wraith Form early and attack them at point-blank range before their cooldown timer expires. Remember that your shotguns will be fully reloaded upon using this ability.
  • Ability-reaper3 Shadow Step: When activated, Reaper will switch to a targeting mode, allowing him to select a point within his line of sight to Shadow Step to. Once he finds a suitable point, he can press the primary fire button to teleport to the target location after a short delay.
    • This is Reaper's main method of flanking. Use Shadow Step to get to higher ground or behind enemy lines without having to travel there directly.
    • Note that Reaper is immobile and cannot use weapons or abilities while using Shadow Step. He is also completely vulnerable to attack at the target location while the teleportation completes. Try to only Shadow Step from and to a safe position, as you otherwise make an easy target, especially for snipers such as Widowmaker, Hanzo, and Ana.
    • Shadow Step's voice line is loud enough that Reaper can be heard from a considerable distance away, though announcing your ultimate charge will negate the voice line completely. Be careful when using it as a flank method, and make sure that the enemy won't hear his approach.
  • Ability-reaper4 Death Blossom (Ultimate): Reaper's Ultimate ability. When activated, Reaper begins to fire his shotguns at all enemies in a large radius around himself, dealing massive damage to all nearby enemies that are within his line of sight for a short period of time. His movement speed is slowed for the duration, and he cannot use normal attacks or abilities. This is a channeled ability, and stuns will immediately end Death Blossom's effect.
    • Death Blossom is of the deadliest Ultimates in the game against a stacked enemy team. Look for opportunities where your opponents are clumped together and where you can silently approach to unleash Death Blossom.
    • Death Blossom's damage is treated in much the same way as Hellfire Shotguns, meaning that it will be blocked by barriers, D.Va's Defense Matrix, and solid objects as well as enemy players themselves. Try to make sure that your opponents don't have a corner they can duck behind when you activate Death Blossom, or you may end up wasting your Ultimate.
    • Death Blossom fires shots towards each enemy (including objects) in range, instead of directly damaging each enemy, as an area ability would. As a result, if a target is in front other targets, it will take all the damage aimed at everyone behind them.
      • When there is a priority enemy to eliminate, this can be used to your advantage by positioning yourself such that they are between you and any other nearby players and objects.
      • This will also make quick work of barriers, if there are multiple targets behind it.
    • It is paramount to the success of your ult that you make sure the enemy team does not have any CC abilities ready. Neglecting to do this will result in you being slept, stunned, hooked and even environmentally killed. Even Ana's Biotic Grenade can disrupt your ultimate by stopping your self healing. Either keep track of and bait cooldowns, or force the enemy to switch by focusing them.

General Strategies

  • Reaper's high damage output makes him a great counter to durable characters like Winston or Roadhog. Consider using Reaper if up against multiple Tanks.
  • Reaper is usually not effective as a straightforward Assault hero like Pharah or Soldier: 76. Instead, use a combination of Shadow Step and side routes to carefully maneuver behind your opponents so that you can ambush them with your Hellfire Shotguns. Having good knowledge of each map and learning where Reaper can use Shadow Step effectively greatly increases his usefulness. Don't be afraid to spend time in a Custom Game on each of the maps finding out where Shadow Step can take you.
  • Try to focus your gameplay around Wraith Form's cooldown. When Wraith Form is off cooldown, you can afford to play more aggressively, since you have it available to escape if needed. When Wraith Form is on cooldown, play more defensively and don't take unnecessary risks.
  • When flanking, look to pick off lone targets rather than charging straight into a group (unless Death Blossom is available). While Reaper is more durable than other flankers, his lack of in-combat mobility means that he relies solely on Wraith Form to escape, and its short duration means that enemy heroes can follow and kill you easily if you're too far away from your own team.
  • It can be tempting to use Death Blossom when at low health, since this would remove the sources of the damage you're taking. Never do this. The enemy team will focus on you as soon as you use it, and Death Blossom ends immediately when Reaper dies.
  • When ambushing with Death Blossom, look for ledges or other raised areas that you can leap off of to get into the middle of the enemy team before activating your Ultimate. Always use the element of surprise in your favor.
  • When Reaper reloads, his magazine refills very quickly after reloading — roughly at the point Reaper fully releases his shotguns and they fall from his view — meaning you don't have to finish the animation. Taking an action other than firing (being stunned, using a quick melee attack, etc.) at the moment the ammo counter shows a full magazine of 8/8 allows for less time watching a useless animation and a faster response time, which is helpful against targets such as Reinhardt and Roadhog, who can kill you while you are vulnerable reloading.
    • Keep in mind that Wraith Form will reload your shotguns as one of its own side-effects, so using Wraith Form just as a means to cancel your reload animation is essentially wasting Wraith Form.

Match-Ups and Team Synergy

Tank

Hero Match-Up Team Synergy
Icon-dva
D.Va
While D.Va will struggle to kill you, she can be annoying to deal with. Her Defense Matrix will force you to either waste shots or waste time, and it can block all the damage from Death Blossom. D.Va can also easily escape with her Boosters should the fight turn against her, making her difficult to kill. In a sustained fight with her, though, you will usually come out on top; if you can wait out the duration of her Defense Matrix and catch her while Boosters is on cooldown, you can rip through her health with a few accurate shots. You can also use Wraith Form to either flee from a poor engagement or to quickly reload and finish D.Va's Mech off before she can use Boosters or Defense Matrix. If you destroy her Mech, try to quickly kill her Pilot form before she can escape; while she can be easily dispatched at close range, she'll have you beat at long range with her accurate and powerful Light Pistol. (To be added)
Icon-orisa
Orisa
Although Orisa's large hitbox and slow movement should her a perfect target to tear apart with your shotguns, her high damage resistance and headshot immunity during Ability Orisa Fortify Fortify make her difficult to kill. she can easily disrupt you with her Ability JavelinSpin Javelin Spin and Ability EnergyJavelin Energy Javelin, so it's recommended to focus her mostly after she's used her abilities. Be wary of using Ability-reaper4 Death Blossom near her, as she can stun you out of it or move you away with Ability JavelinSpin Javelin Spin. Instead, try focus her Supports or DPS, who will be easier to eliminate. For Ultimate TerraSurge Terra Surge, escape with Ability-reaper2 Wraith Form or Ability-reaper3 Shadow Step, or take the opportunity to damage her, as she is immobile. (To be added)
Icon-reinhardt
Reinhardt
While you and Reinhardt both prefer to fight at close range, your massive damage output and self-healing will make it almost impossible for Reinhardt to kill you without a well-aimed Charge or Earthshatter. If Reinhardt is attempting to hit you with his hammer, you can easily stay just outside its range and attack away with your shotguns; if he chooses instead to lift his barrier, just walk through it and shoot him point blank. If you anticipate an oncoming Charge, have Wraith Form at the ready to dodge it. If timed right, you can avoid Ability-reinhardt5 Earthshatter with Ability-reaper2 Wraith Form, saving yourself from an easy elimination. (To be added)
Icon-roadhog
Roadhog
Be wary of Roadhog's hook combo, as it can kill you if you're not careful. Watch the ground for his Ability-Roadhog5 Pig Pen, as he'll likely be nearby ready to hook you. If you do step on the trap, prepare to Ability-reaper2 Wraith Form to dodge his hook, or reposition quickly to avoid him completely. A fight with Roadhog is a fight of positioning and attrition, as you both deal your best damage at close range and you both have self-heal abilities. If you avoid his Chain Hook, though, your massive damage should be able to rip through him before he has time to use it again. Roadhog can totally shut down Death Blossom with a well-placed hook, so be wary of him when using it. (To be added)
Icon-sigma
Sigma
Sigma's only defences against your assaults are his Kinetic Grasp and Accretion, which he can use to buy time to escape or keep you at bay. Otherwise, you can easily tear through his health and his Barrier won't do much to stop you. In a 1v1, take the time to reload if you need to while he uses Kinetic Grasp as he can't cancel it to fight back, and shooting into it will give him more health. You can also avoid his Accretion altogether with Wraith Form. You can't escape Abilities-sigma5 Gravitic Flux with your abilities, so if you hear him use his Ultimate, use your abilities to escape the targeted area. If you are caught in his ultimate, you can immediatly use Ability-reaper2 Wraith Form afterwards to escape, given you survive. While lifted by his ultimate, try and shoot the Sigma or any enemies to lifesteal and hopefully stay above half health to survive the slam. (To be added)
Icon-wrecking ball
Wrecking Ball
Due to Wrecking Ball's high mobility you'll rarely be able to confirm a kill on him unless he commits to a 1v1, however you can reduce his effectiveness by playing around your vulnerable teammates he would want to dive, like your Supports or a friendly sniper. You can force him to retreat with a few shots and make him play more cautiously and wary. (To be added)
Icon-winston
Winston
With a massive body, slow movement and weak weapon, Winston is one of your weakest opponents. Watch where Winston jumps, and if he lands close enough to chase down, don't hesitate to use Wraith Form to catch up to him and finish him off. If Winston is trying to heckle your weaker teammates, stick close to them and you'll prove to be a massive deterrent. If Winston activates Primal Rage, you can try to gun him down as he'll have difficulty killing you with his weak punches; just be wary of any nearby cliffs, as he can send you flying to your doom with little means to save yourself. (To be added)
Icon-zarya
Zarya
With well-timed shots and usage of Wraith Form, you can wait out Zarya's energy barrier. If you're not careful, though, Zarya's barriers on herself and her team can absorb your high damage to power her up. While you can burst down Zarya's barriers instead of waiting them out, this puts you at risk of a high-energy Zarya. If she (or the ally she's protecting) is at low health, it may be worth it to run through the barrier, otherwise it would be better to wait it out so Zarya doesn't get her massive charge. One on one, you should have little difficulty dealing with Zarya, but if Zarya is with a group, you shouldn't engage without support. During Ability-zarya4 Graviton Surge, save your Wraith for when you're close to death, as using it too early may only save you from the initial damage. While you have high damage output, you're not particularly fast, meaning it can be difficult to avoid oncoming fire. A friendly Zarya barrier can free you up to lay waste to your opponents, all while making your Zarya stronger should your opponents choose to attack you. A group of enemies clustered with Graviton Surge can serve as easy pickings for Death Blossom, or even simply for some point-blank shotgun fire.

Damage

Hero Match-Up Team Synergy
Icon-ashe
Ashe
If you can flank Ashe successfully, you can easily take her out with a few shots before she can react. However if you don't surprise her she can either gun you down from afar or create distance with her Coach Gun. She will usually use the ability as soon as she turns and looks at you in a panic, so try to pre-emptively Wraith Form when she sees you and you can avoid the knockback and chase her down for a quick kill. (To be added)
Icon-bastion
Bastion
Bastion will tear you down in seconds if he catches you out in the open, therefore he can be quite problematic for Reaper. If he's alone and not being supported by his team, you can attempt to flank him and take him out by yourself, however you will need to be quick and effective before he can react, as he can still out-damage you at your effective range if you're not careful, and his A-36 Icon A-36 Tactical Grenade can knock you away from him. (To be added)
Icon-cassidy
Cassidy
Like other ranged heroes, Cassidy will make quick work of you at a distance. Unlike other ranged heroes, flanking him is difficult because he can turn the tables with a single Flashbang. Like with Ashe, Cassidy will likely use the ability as soon as he looks at you, so fire one or two shots, then Wraith Form to dodge the Flashbang and confirm a kill. Cassidy makes a good teammate for Reaper, as Cassidy’s longer range compliments Reaper’s close range. Cassidy’s flashbang and secondary fire make him still effective at close range. When using Death Blossom, Cassidy can lay down suppressing fire to keep Reaper alive while using his ultimate.
Icon-doomfist
Doomfist
Reaper can beat Doomfist almost every time in a 1v1 due to your lifesteal and significantly better close range damage. Don't be afraid to take his combos as you can take them and do even stronger damage back to him, either killing him or forcing him to flee. Smart Doomfists will try to avoid you and target other players on your team, however if there is no one on your team more suitable to do so, you can play the role of a flank watcher and try to shut down his flanks by playing with your vulnerable teammates. The one trick up Doomfist's sleeve is his Rocket Punch, as he can one shot you if you're not careful. Fortunately, because Doomfist is loud he'll rarely get the jump on you and you can Wraith Form to dodge the blow. (To be added)
Icon-echo
Echo
Unless you can catch her without her Flight, try not to bother with Echo as she can quickly maneuver out of your effective range and burst you down from afar. Generally speaking Echo is strong against Reaper due to her aerial mobility, so consider switching if she is making your life harder. (To be added)
Icon-genji
Genji
Genji can easily stay out of your effective range and if he ends up too close he can use his Deflect to send your shots back at you. However, he doesn't necessarily have the killing power to put you down, and can't get into point-blank range for long enough to use Fan of Blades for obvious reasons. (To be added)
Icon-hanzo
Hanzo
While Reaper can quickly dispatch Hanzo if you can get close, Hanzo's Storm Arrows can run through you at close distances. At any sort of significant range, Hanzo has the clear advantage, as his arrows work just fine at range while Reaper's damage rapidly declines. Worse, Hanzo's Sonic Arrow can reveal you if you try to sneak around. While it is often the case that Reaper can survive an encounter with Hanzo by using Wraith Form, it is best to avoid engagement with Hanzo unless you can get the drop on him. (To be added)
Icon-junkrat
Junkrat
A lot of Junkrat's strategies are foiled by Wraith Form. You can phase right through chokepoints flooded with grenades, Steel Trap and Total Mayhem, albeit at the cost of your escape mechanism. You will likely win at close range, unless Junkrat has his Concussion Mine off cooldown, which can cause problems. (To be added)
Icon-mei
Mei
Since you can avoid getting frozen by Mei with Wraith Form and you tear her apart when within range of her Endothermic Blaster, she will struggle to deal with you. However, Mei's walls can both spoil your approach as well as prevent you from retreating with Wraith Form. At range, Mei has a clear advantage with her Icicles. Mei also has Cyro-Freeze to save herself when at low health or to stall and wait for her allies to arrive. Your heavy damage can sometimes kill her before she realizes she's in danger, particularly with a close-range head shot. (To be added)
Icon-pharah
Pharah
Pharah is a strong counter to Reaper because she will usually be hovering in the air where you can't do anything to her. She can also spam you down from afar with rockets and displace you with Concussive Blast, forcing you to Wraith Form every time. If you don't have a ranged hero suitable for dealing with Pharah, it's advised you switch to one if she is a problem. (To be added)
Icon-reaper
Reaper
Reaper vs Reaper simply comes down to who kills who first. Aim for the head and be ready to activate Wraith Form should the fight go sour. (To be added)
Icon-Soldier 76
Soldier: 76
Soldier: 76 will win if he maintains his distance and fires in short, quick bursts, using his Helix Rockets to quickly finish you off before he has a chance to escape with Wraith Form. Up close though, Reaper is much more likely to win, as 76's damage doesn't increase up close unlike his. (To be added)
Icon-sombra
Sombra
A Hack from Sombra can keep you on ground without Wraith Form to flee from or pursue her and her team. Her Hack and EMP will also stop Death Blossom mid-use, blinding your action in the team fight. However, you have more firepower to use against Sombra and a large amount of health. Even if hacked, in a 1 on 1 situation you should be able to handle Sombra at close range. (To be added)
Icon-symmetra
Symmetra
Symmetra Photon Projector has high damage output just like your Hellfire Shotguns, but her health is 200 compared to your 250, and at point blank range you should be able to outdamage her even if her weapon is powered up. Should you spot her turrets, a single shot should be able to take them out. If caught off guard by multiple turrets, though, it may be wiser to use Wraith Form to fall back and heal before going back in to take the turrets out. A well-timed Photon Barrier can block all of the damage from Death Blossom, so be wary. (To be added)
Icon-torbjörn
Torbjörn
Torbjörn, much like Reaper, has a powerful shotgun-like attack with his Rivet Gun. A well-placed Turret can annoy you, as you will be able to do little to it while at long range, while safely flanking it could cost you the use of your Wraith Form. Torbjorn's Overload can save him from Death Blossom. If Torbjörn's teammates aren't nearby, however, you shouldn't hesitate to flank his turret, as even when fighting both the turret and him, your massive damage output and self-heal should keep you alive long enough to kill him and his turret. Just watch your health when choosing which target to take down first, as The Reaping won't activate when damaging Torbjörn's turret, only Torbjörn himself. (To be added)
Icon-tracer
Tracer
Tracer and Reaper both thrive in close-range combat, but while Tracer has mobility, you have higher firepower. Just one good shot will kill Tracer if immediately followed by a quick melee, and Tracer's Recall won't serve her much good due to how quickly you can put out damage. However, this doesn't necessarily mean you should play Reaper specifically to counter Tracer. You will only win if Tracer keeps fighting in close range with poor Blink usage. If she's attacking you from a safe middle distance, try to regroup with your team, where she'll have more difficulty picking you off. (To be added)
Icon-widowmaker
Widowmaker
Widowmaker is capable of staying far outside your range and picking you off in one headshot. You should avoid playing in her sightlines where she can easily see and snipe you before you can do anything about it. It's also difficult to flank her because of her Venom Mine and ability to evade you with a well time Grappling Hook. A good Widowmaker will make your life very difficult so either let your team deal with her or swap to another hero better at dealing with her. When Infra-Sights is active, you can get a better of view of any lone enemies who can fall victim to your ambush.

Support

Hero Match-Up Team Synergy

Icon-ana
Ana
Ana will normally be far out of your range, and should you attempt to get close, she can use her Sleep Dart and Biotic Grenade to keep you away, if not outright kill you. However, she doesn't have a reliable escape option like Widowmaker or other Support characters do. If attempting to flank her, be wary of her Sleep Dart and Biotic Grenade, and use Wraith Form to dodge them if need be. If you can evade these tools and her teammates aren't nearby, you should have no difficulty ripping through her. Bear in mind that when affected by Biotic Grenade, The Reaping will no longer heal you. If you're in a group fight and you are hit by Biotic Grenade, it may be better to avoid combat, as without your usual self-healing, beefier enemies may be able to kill you before you can kill them. Beware of Ana when using Death Blossom, as an accurate Sleep Dart can shut you down. While you will have a tendency to want to flank your opponents, it's important to keep an eye on where your Ana is; not only will she rely on you to deal with harassing threats such as Winston and Wrecking Ball, she also won't be able to heal you unless you're in her line of sight. If affected by a friendly Biotic Grenade, all sources of healing will be magnified; this includes The Reaping, so you can be braver for a period of time with less risk of getting killed should you put out significant damage. You are a reasonable target for Nano-Boost, especially if you combine it with Death Blossom, which can rip through even the sturdiest of barriers to slaughter a group of enemies.
Icon-baptiste
Baptiste
Baptiste's Exo Boots and Immortality Field allow him to escape you easily to a range where he's more comfortable. His Immortality Field will also completely neuter your Ultimate and save his team from it. Either destroy or wait it out before you death blossom. If you feel the need for additional security when using Death Blossom, you can request a friendly Baptiste to throw his Immortality Field your way. This will keep you safe for the duration of your Ultimate, and can help rip through hunkered down enemies that would normally kill you before you can kill them, such as a Bastion set up with an Orisa and Baptiste.
Icon-brigitte
Brigitte
Although she can't exactly beat you in a 1v1 , Brigitte can reduce your effectiveness. She can Shield Bash you to cancel your Ultimate or simply knock you away from her team with a well placed whip. Her crowd control abilities, Inspire passive ability and ability to block full blasts from your shotguns mean she can defend herself or her teammates from your assaults. You're better off prioritising other targets. As you and Brigitte both benefit from close-quarters engagements, it's in the best interests of both of you to stick together; her Inspire will keep you constantly healed, while you will be able to fend off any flankers as well as large targets that stand in your way. This strategy is best suited for traveling through tight indoor spaces, though, as out in the open you're both at the mercy of long-range attackers such as Widowmaker or Cassidy.
Icon-lúcio
Lúcio
With his Speed Boost and Soundwave, Lúcio can keep you away from his team, severely dampening your potential to finish him and his allies off. Sound Barrier can also be used to mitigate a large portion of the damage from Death Blossom, so try to keep track of whether Lúcio has it ready, and if he does, attempt to bait it out before using Death Blossom. On the plus side, because Lúcio relies on keeping his teammates close, this can makes them unwitting fodder for Death Blossom should you catch them when Sound Barrier isn't ready. Lúcio's Speed Boost can improve your slow walking speed, which can help you keep up with and kill fleeing enemies.
Icon-mercy
Mercy
Mercy is practically defenseless against Reaper. Be wary of Guardian Angel, though, as she can use it as an emergency escape to get away from your standard attacks, or even to avoid a Death Blossom. Mercy's damage boost can improve the healing you receive from The Reaping, effectively giving you both a damage boost and a health boost. When you activate Death Blossom, it may be wise for a courageous Mercy to keep her damage boost on you, which can help you run through the enemy team with greater ease.
Icon-moira
Moira
Flanking Moira is tough because if you fail to get the jump on her or don't kill her quickly enough she can create a lot of distance with Fade and heal herself. If she didn't go far however, you can use Wraith Form to catch up to her and finish her off. Her damage orbs can be a serious threat in enclosed and narrow areas so avoid fighting Moira where she can bounce them around a lot. As Moira's healing requires her allies to be close by, try not to lose sight of her, or in the very least be ready to return to her when disengaging from the enemy team.
Icon-zenyatta
Zenyatta
Depending on the skill of both parties, Zenyatta can be an even match-up against you. While his mobility is low, he has a significant range advantage as well as the ability to amplify his damage on you with Orb of Discord. While Wraith Form will dispel Orb of Discord, Zenyatta can instantly reapply it when you rematerialize. Even at point blank range, an accurate Zenyatta may be able to land consecutive boosted headshots on you before you can finish him off, and in an emergency Zenyatta can activate Transcendence to save himself and to regroup with his team. Your best bet against Zenyatta is to catch him by surprise and flank him before he has a chance to call allies for support. Zenyatta's Transcendence can completely negate all of the damage from Death Blossom, so try to either bait Transcendence out first or kill Zenyatta before activating Death Blossom. If you stay within Zenyatta's line of sight, Orb of Harmony can keep you sufficiently healthy to allow you to stand your ground and attack opponents, while Orb of Discord can help you quickly run through enemies one after the other.

Story

Death walks among you.
~ Reaper
Icon-reaper

Thanks to his military training, Reaper has a 'sixth sense' for danger.[2] Due to experiments carried out by Dr. Moira O'Deorain,[3] Reaper's cells simultaneously decay and regenerate at a hyper-accelerated rate.[4] The process has been described as "molecular cleansing," where he is "wiped away piece by piece." One moment he may appear as flesh and blood, the next, as a cloud of black smoke—disjointed, but still in control of his molecules.[2] Even after the complete destruction of his body, Reaper has been observed as being a "black mist," and is then able to regain physical form at a later point.[5] He has described living in the condition as a form of "constant agony," though it is only through O'Deorain's experiments that he is able to stay alive.[6] Because of these same treatments, Reaper finds it difficult to control his anger.[2] He is sadistic[7] but intelligent, with a keen sense of observation, and has talent in information-gathering. He prefers to operate behind the scenes.[8]

Reaper dual-wields Hellfire shotguns, and is equipped with a specialized mask. While the latter has its practical uses, Reaper also keeps it on to hide is disfigured face, and to not be recognized by his former family.[2]

As Gabriel Reyes, he had a sense of honor that his later persona came to consider antiquated. As Reaper, Reyes believes in a "code of violence," which is, in his view, the only code the world respects. To this end, he is willing to work with Talon, believing in Doomfist's vision for a new world order.[2]

Pre-Crisis

Gabriel Reyes was born in Los Angeles, California.[9] The Reyes family had lived in LA for generations.after moving from Mexico to the us His mother was a social worker, and his father operated his own convenience store. Both of Gabriel's parents were proud of their intelligent, athletic son, and supported his decision to join law enforcement after graduating college early with a degree in criminology.[8]

Reyes joined the Los Angeles Police Department.[8] As a police officer, he participated in hundreds of violent crime arrests.[2] Reyes fast-tracked his way into a detective posting, where he was able to hone his already keen sense of observation and talent for information-gathering. He came to realize that sometimes, the quieter work was essential to unraveling larger issues.[8] However, despite all of his work in the force, the crime rate never seemed to decrease, leading him to believe that he would have to get to the source of the problem to truly destroy it.[2]

In his twenties, looking for a change of pace, Reyes enlisted in the United States Army, some nine years before the outbreak of the Omnic Crisis. Reyes did well and became known as a mustang, working his way up through the ranks before obtaining a senior officer's position,[8] then veteran status, and was highly respected.[9] He helped topple a number of authoritarian regimes, but watched in dismay as mega-corporations took control and repeated the same abuses just to maximize profits. Time and again, Reyes watched as the innocent suffered while the elites escaped prosecution. He took part in numerous extraction missions, though was was often tasked with simply extracting the target and handing them off to another party. Sometimes, to a fate "too ghastly to recall."[2] Later, he became involved in matters of national security.[8]

Reaper Skin Soldier- 24

Reyes as "Soldier: 24"

Reyes later earned a coveted position in the government's controversial and classified (but widely acknowledged) Soldier Enhancement Program. Military scientists shaped Reyes and other inductees into the perfect soldiers, augmented with superhuman speed, strength, and agility.[9] During the soldier enhancement program, Reyes was referred to as Soldier: 24.[10] He made few friends among the other recruits.[8]

The Omnic Crisis

The Soldier Enhancement Program

Reyes was still part of the Soldier Enhancement Program when the Omnic Crisis began. He helped coordinate multiple early troop movements in response to Anubis's attacks, and fought fiercely against the proposal that all large urban meetings be ceded to Anubis. It was during one such comittee meeting that Reyes learned that both his parents had been killed in an assault on Los Angeles. Reyes became depressed, blaming tactical decisions he'd taken part in for the loss of his parents. He continued to train with other SEP candidates, but those who knew him during could tell that Reyes had become unfocused. He remained standoffish towards his fellow candidates, as he was aware of the probable outcomes that most of them would experience (death).[8]

However, Reyes did end up befriending one fellow candidate—Jack Morrison, designated Soldier: 76. Given how the SEP worked, this made Morrison the 76th candidate, and he was hazed for his high recruitment number, with many other candidates seeing his late enlistment as a sign of cowardice. Reyes was not among them, as he recognized Morrison's quiet determination that he judged would carry him through the enhancement process.[8] Despite their different backgrounds, Reyes and Morrison became fast friends,[9] and Reyes provided Morrison with emotional support as they both endured the seemingly endless barrage of medical experimentation.[8]

Eventually, the tests ended, and Reyes and Morrison emerged as super-soldiers, along with the minority of other candidates who'd survived the process. They left the Wheeler Facility 24 hours before being cleared for release, eager as they were to rejoin the fight. Technically, this meant they were already in the field before they were announced to the world (the only two candidates to be formally revealed). Reyes's first recorded action as a SEP member was the Battle of Echo Park, where he saved thousands of lives and drove the invading omnics back to Glendale.[8]

While in the SEP, Reyes tended to take on smaller, less flashy missions. However, he was still integral to the Program's public success. He enjoyed challenges that relied on stealth and intelligence, given his police background.[8]

Joining Overwatch

Gabriel Reyes

Reyes during the Omnic Crisis

As governments tried and failed to neutralize the omnics, the United Nations was busy forming an international task force called Overwatch. Reyes and Morrison were both on the shortlist of prospective members.[9] While Reyes was not the first person to be approached to lead its strike team, he was the first person to accept, thus becoming the first person to be recruited into Overwatch (officially), and ultimately, its first strike commander.[9][11][8] Reyes accepted, but was uneasy with the role. As a man who had always preferred to operate behind the scenes, he was ill-at-ease with the global attention. Morrison, who was recruited as Overwatch's second member,[8] would have a greater impact on the group in the long term. He brought out the best in the people around him and helped mold Overwatch's diverse (and sometimes conflicting) agents into a cohesive fighting force.[9]

Operations

Alongside Morrison and Ana Amari, Reyes took part in an operation at Rio de Janeiro. By this stage, the burden of leadership was beginning to get to him.[12]

In unity, they found the strength to defeat the robots and end the Omnic Crisis.[9]

Reorganization

Gabriel built our team to save humanity, but he couldn’t rebuild afterwards. Adawe and the others thought Morrison was the one who could.
~ Ana Amari

After the Omnic Crisis, Morrison, because of the key role he played in shaping the group, was given the position of strike commander by the UN, the first, official commanding officer of Overwatch.[9] Reyes was overlooked due to being "too rogue," along with his maverick leadership style.[13] Ana Amari was of the opinion that Reyes was overlooked as Gabrielle Adawe felt that Morrison could lead rebuilding efforts better than him, further commenting that Morrison "looked the part" of a war hero.[14]

Despite losing his rank, Reyes was relieved that Morrison was given the position, preferring to be the number 2 rather than hold the more political position.[15] Morrison told Reyes that they made the wrong choice, that Reyes should have been in charge, but regardless, Morrison retained the position.[12]

Not long after the end of the Omnic Crisis, Reyes met a woman named Martina while on leave in Mexico.[8] The pair later married and had a son. When his son was six, he took him to Echo Park.[2]

Blackwatch

Reaper Skin Blackwatch Reyes

Reyes as a member of Blackwatch

Reyes became the commander of Overwatch's Blackwatch unit.[16] After a sting operation that resulted in the apprehension of Cole Cassidy the leader of the Deadlock Gang, Reyes visited the man, as he was impressed with his expert marksmanship and resourcefulness. Reyes gave Cassidy the choice between rotting in a maximum security prison, or joining Blackwatch. Cassidy chose the latter.[17] Reyes gave him personal instruction.[18]

At some point, Reyes and Gerard Lacroix partook in an operation in Cape Town, where Lacroix apparently saved Reyes, though Reyes remained mute on what actually happened (though in recollection, apparently found the experience amusing).[19]

Another individual that Reyes recruited into Blackwatch was disgraced geneticist Moira O'Deorain, as he wanted someone who could advise him on genetics.[20] O'Deorain's experiments on Reyes gave him supernatural abilities,[3] including the ability to manipulate his form.[2]

A Growing Rift

ReyesJunkenstein

Reyes on Halloween

At least for a time, Reyes remained on good terms with the rest of the team. On one Halloween, he dressed up as a pumpkin-headed monster, bursting through the door as Reinhardt was telling a Halloween story. Angela Ziegler and Torbjörn gave praise to his costume, with Ziegler asking him if he'd be open to designing their official uniforms. He responds with "that'll be the day."[21]

As time went on, the tension between Reyes and Morrison worsened,[9] even though Morrison spent a lot of time defending Reyes's more questionable actions.[13]

Retribution

Rome
Our enemies think they can get away with this. They think Overwatch has limits to how far it will go to protect the world...because it follows a system of rules that Talon doesn't play by. But what they don't realize is...I don't play by those rules either.
~ Gabriel Reyes
ReyesRetribution

Reyes deep in thought

Nine years before the present day, Talon appeared on Overwatch's radar. One year later, Reyes was in Rome's new Blackwatch facility alongside Cassidy to meet up with Gérard Lacroix,[19] who was spearheading anti-Talon operations.[22] Lacroix briefed them on Antonio, a Talon arms dealer who had links with the Italian government, and who was also behind a recent attack on Overwatch's Oslo facilities. Antonio was holed up in Rialto, a compound in Venice. Cassidy was all for a "road trip," but Lacroix pointed out that Antonio was too well connected, and planned to play the long game in bringing Antonio to justice. Reyes agreed with Lacroix, and left the building with Cassidy. Seconds after exiting, the building was destroyed in an explosion set by a Talon agent. Reyes and Cassidy rushed into the burning rubble to save whoever they could find, with Reyes pulling out Lacroix.

Reyes was shaken by the event. Lacroix survived, and Ziegler informed him that he would make a full recovery, but at least 14 other agents and personnel weren't as lucky. At Overwatch Headquarters, he discussed the issue with Jack Morrison, and Morrison stated that they'd launch an official investigation. Reyes stated that Morrison's approach of "by the book" wasn't working, and that Antonio would weasel his way out of any proceedings launched at him. Reyes told Morrison that he wanted to apprehend Antonio to interrogate him, but Morrison pointed out that if such an operation was sanctioned, it would be a violation of Italy's sovereignty, and would erode the public trust in Overwatch. Reyes agreed that officially Morrison could never do so, but Blackwatch could get it done with no public relations conflict. Morrison left the final choice with Reyes, but asked him to seriously consider if it would help Overwatch keep the world safe in the long run.

After silently thinking things over at Lacroix's bedside, Reyes decided to go ahead with the operation and took himself, Cassidy, O'Deorain, and Genji Shimada on that "road trip" that Cassidy had suggested back in Rome. Reyes planned to snatch Antonio from Venice for a few days of interrogation, and use what he knew of Talon to hit the organization hard.[19]

Reyes fights his way through Talon's forces

Arriving in Venice, Reyes and his team used the safehouse there and set up surveillance on Antonio's manor. It was heavily guarded by Talon soldiers, but when night fell, the unit moved in.[23] The initial plan was to go in quietly,[24] and in that, they succeeded, stealthily making their way to Antonio's office. Antonio however, was unfazed, calling Reyes by name. He pointed out that Overwatch abducting a "respected businessman" would be a public relations nightmare, and even if they did take him, Antonio's "friends" would have him released within the week. Reyes, after some thought, said "you're right," and shot Antonio, sending his body flying out the office window, much to the consternation of Cassidy. This alerted the guards to their presence, and the Blackwatch team had to fight their way out of the manor. As they fought, Reyes and Cassidy continued to verbally spar over Reyes's actions. O'Deorain however, stated that Reyes had done the right thing. Reyes stated that he'd never apologized for anything before, and that he didn't intend to start now—someone had to get things done.

Debriefing

Reyes is debriefed

The team succeeded in escaping the manor.[25] In the aftermath, Morrison was incensed by Reyes's actions;[23] the attack was reported in the press, and the existence of Blackwatch had been made public. Reyes was debriefed by Morrison, Ana Amari, and a recovered Lacroix.[25] Morrison grilled Reyes in the debriefing, demanding to know what had actually happened. Reyes snidely responded to Morrison's demands, but nonetheless recounted the Rialto mission.[23] In his debrief, he pointed out that things don't always go according to plan, and stood by the decisions he had made.[26] Reyes and the others were put under suspension.[27]

Uprising

~ Reyes and Ana Amari
Reyes-uprising

Reyes during the King's Row Uprising

Seven years before the present day, Reyes and Morrison attended a briefing on the King's Row Uprising in Overwatch's headquarters. During the briefing, Blackwatch agent Cassidy reported on a developing hostage situation occurring at a power plant, despite the prime minister of England's demands that Overwatch remain out of the crisis. Angered by the breach of protocol, Reyes shrugged off Jack's accusing finger, stating that Cassidy was merely on "vacation," and that he was not tied down by the statute. He left the command room, stating that the Brits had this under control, snidely drawing reference to Morrison's statue in the headquarters's courtyard.[28]

The following day, a strike team sent in by Morrison arrived in King's Row. Reyes informed them that Blackwatch assets had reported that Null Sector had set up heavy fortifications, and they had tactical control of the area.[29] Null Sector was defeated, but the events that transpired were classified within Overwatch's archives.[30]

Meeting Doomfist
We are men of war. It's only natural that this false peace wouldn’t fool you. But not to worry, I’m at a supreme disadvantage-
Where you belong.
In your estimation, perhaps. I am neither the first nor the last with the vision to question the global order. I’m only one of many who realize how broken the world is.
~ Doomfist and Reyes

A key point in Reyes's life was when he met Doomfist, after his apprehension in Singapore (an apprehension that Reyes played a role in), three weeks after his accountant was cornered in Havana, Cuba and cut a deal with Overwatch. While Reyes had some satisfaction in seeing Doomfist incarcerated, Doomfist himself was unperturbed, calmly pointing out the world's broken global order, and how he, in his own view, fought against it. Reyes had long held similar doubts, but maintained that one could recognize a flawed system without resorting to terrorism. Doomfist acknowledged the point, but asked Reyes what he'd accomplished in that regard, be it as a police officer, a soldier, or an agent of Overwatch.

Reyes found himself unable to answer, and Doomfist asked another question—who was he really protecting? Again, Reyes couldn't answer, as he realized the truth in Doomfist's words. Of all the organizations he'd been part of, none of them had fixed the system. Not even Overwatch. It was in this moment that a seed of vengeance was planted in Reyes’s psyche. A seed that would give rise to Reaper. A ghost no longer subscribing to outdated notions of honor, but rather a new believer in a code of violence.

The only code the world respected.[2]

Reflections

After Ana disappeared in an operation conducted in Poland, Reyes assigned Cassidy to find her. However, Overwatch was unable to find her.[12]

The End of Overwatch

Ultimately, Overwatch met its end through a combination of accusations that tainted the organization's reputation, and Reyes himself. Officially, Reyes and Morrison were killed in the blast that destroyed Overwatch's Swiss headquarters, an event the UN ruled as an accident. In reality, Overwatch had become split down the middle, with Reyes leading a rebellion against Morrison's leadership. As a battle was waged within the base, their fighting triggered an explosion that destroyed the facility.[9] In his last moments, he saw the flash of ignition, felt the searing heat, saw the horror in Morrison's eyes, and then...darkness.[2] As far as anyone knew, the explosion that consumed the structure took Reyes and Morrison into the inferno with it. To the present day, Reyes's true agenda remains unknown to the wider public.[9]

Resurrection

Why am I being subjected to this agony?
No need to thank me, I only saved your life.
~ Moira and Reyes at some point after the blast

Reyes barely survived the blast, and woke up to find Dr. O'Deorain standing over him. As Reyes drifted in and out of consciousness, Moira explained how she’d overloaded his body with a cocktail of experimental chemicals—an enhanced version of the substance that had first given him the ability to manipulate his form. She claimed he'd been so close to death that she was left with no other option. Reyes lay on the gurney, feeling a sense of indescribable detachment—as if his body were made of a silky molten metal that flowed between various states of matter. In one moment, he was flesh and blood; the next, he was a cluster of black smoke, aware of every molecule and yet terrified of losing command of it. Reyes looked at his arm, a torrent of ebon mist in the vague shape of an appendage. Internally, he screamed in horror, but a very small part of his brain was intrigued by it. He knew his power had grown, and his old life felt like a prologue.[2]

Reyes was left in a state of agony,[6] and it was now much harder for him to control his anger,[2] but thanks to O'Deorain, he was alive.[6] Dr. O'Deorain's procedure had amplified his powers, but had significantly destabilized his ability to control them.[31] Reyes blamed Morrison for what had happened to him, and he didn't believe that his former friend had perished in the blast. He set out on a personal crusade to find Morrison and finish what had begun in Switzerland.[32]

Reaper

Some speak of a black-robed terrorist known only as the Reaper. His identity and motives are a mystery. What is known is that where he appears, death follows.
~ Character description
Reaper Skin Classic

Reyes, now known as "Reaper"

Reyes resurfaced as a volatile mercenary known as "Reaper." His identity and motives remained unknown. Now a ruthless and remorseless killer, he was responsible for terrorist attacks throughout the world. He fought in many armed conflicts throughout the 6 years since the blast, showing no loyalty to any cause or organization. Survivors described him as a black shadow ghosting unscathed through the most hellish battlefields. The few bodies recovered of his victims were pale, empty husks drained of life, their cells showing signs of intense degradation. It was speculated that Reaper was a byproduct of failed genetic alteration which forced his cells to simultaneously decay and regenerate at a hyper-accelerated rate.

Those attempting to track his movements began to see a pattern in his appearances. They believed (correctly) that Reaper was hunting former Overwatch agents and systematically eliminating them.[4] This was indeed the case, as Reaper carried a list of Overwatch agents that he intended on eliminating.[33]

Talon

Listen, amigo. Everyone has a reason for being in Talon. Some have no place else to go—like you.
~ Sombra to Reaper

One year after the destruction of Overwatch's HQ, Reaper joined Talon. While it suited his goals, he was perturbed by Talon's dynamic (or lack thereoff)—multiple people pursuing their own agendas that just happened to align. However, he shared Doomfist's goal of establishing a new world order, and saw Talon as "the bullhorn for the voiceless."[2]

Code of Violence

What is Talon, really? A means to an end. A broadsword to crack the scalpel of the unscrupulous. A code of violence, a domain for the Reaper.
~ The last thoughts of Gabriel Reyes
Reyes-code

Reyes during the extraction mission

Despite remaining incarcerated, Doomfist still had influence in Talon, and one year after Overwatch's end, he assigned Reaper to retrieve Dr. Siebren de Kuiper from a black site[2] in New Mexico.[11] Dropped off via dropship, he met with fellow Talon agent, Sombra. The two grated against each other immediately, Sombra's unorthodox methodology clashing with Reaper's military training. He wondered what Doomfist had told Sombra about him, and wondered who, if anyone, he could rely on within Talon.

Infiltrating the base, Sombra triggered the alarm. Guards responded, but Reaper killed them quickly and efficiently. Part of Sombra's plan, apparently, as she used the distraction to hack the comms. terminal, cutting the base off from the outside world, along with determining the location of de Kuiper. They entered the site proper, though the tension between the two remained. Their goals were aligned for now, but what happened when they weren't?

ReaperSombra-code

Reaper and Sombra

Inside the base, they encountered more guards which Reaper again easily killed, though not without unease, as he remembered that once, he too, had been a soldier in the US military. However, his doubt was dissolved as he remembered Doomfist's words, and by Sombra, who continued to grate on his nerves. Regardless, they entered the base's quantum chamber and found du Kuiper, but ended up drawing their guns on each other. It was broken up by Widowmaker, who led a Talon squad into the lab. Not that he'd known it, but it had been his and Sombra's job to clear a path for the extraction team. As Widowmaker explained, the mission had been too important to leave to amateurs.

Reaper made his way out of the base, passing by the bodies of the fallen. He realized that he'd now crossed the line, and could no longer call himself morally superior to terrorists. As blurred as the line between heroism and criminality could be, he knew he'd stepped over it. As Widowmaker and Sombra boarded the extraction dropship, they both mocked him, telling the mercenary that he'd find his place in Talon, even if it was at Akende's feet. As his own dropship flew over the countryside, Reaper was left to reflect on what Talon actually was. Reprehensible, true, but decicive. A means to an end. As he took off his mask, feeling the wind sting his tortured flesh, the last embers of Gabriel Reyes died.

The only thing that mattered was his need for justice. Something Doomfist required at his disposal if he was going to fix this broken world. Because now, it was all he had left to give.[2]

Watchpoint: Gibraltar

Reaper-recall

Reaper accesses the Overwatch database

Alongside Talon operatives, Reaper entered Watchpoint: Gibraltar in an effort to gain a list of Overwatch agents. The Talon soldiers kept Winston occupied long enough for Reaper to begin downloading the agent database, but soon found themselves overpowered, forcing Reaper to enter the fray. He quickly incapacitated Winston, and mocked the ape that he'd send his fellow agents his regards. Winston stunned Reaper by activating a shield device that detonated, and then used his Tesla Cannon on Reaper, incinerating him. Yet despite this, a cloud of black mist was seen leaving the base awhile later.[5]

In truth, Reaper not only survived Winston's cannon, but had managed to gain access to a portion of the database. He used the data to eliminate a number of Overwatch agents.[33]

Having regained physical form, Reaper teamed up with Widowmaker in order to steal Doomfist's gauntlet, but was hampered by former Overwatch agents Tracer and Winston. While he initially held the advantage, breaking Winston's glasses was enough to send the ape into a berserk fury, and Reaper and Widowmaker were forced to retreat without the device, having been used by a bystander to punch Widowmaker which ended up damaging the gauntlet, their foes hot on their heels.[34]

Reaper gets the drop on Morrison

Reaper was present in Egypt while Hakim was trying to set a trap for Morrison, now waging a one-man war as "Soldier: 76." Hakim's compound came under attack by Morrison, though Reaper managed to get the jump on his old nemesis, shooting him in the back. Before he could finish off Morrison, he was interrupted by Ana Amari, another former Overwatch operative. She healed Morrison through her biotic rifle, and Reaper and Morrison engaged in a fist fight. Reaper was again able to incapacitate Morrison, and engaged in a dual with Ana, bitterly commenting that he shouldn't be surprised, that Ana had always taken Jack's side during their days in Overwatch. In the fight, Ana pulled off his mask, revealing his identity as Gabriel Reyes, and his disfigured face. Reaper faded away, commenting that Overwatch had left him to die, and that Ana should never forget what happened to him.[32]

Reaper led a Talon assault on the Temple of Anubis in Egypt. In the ensuing battle against the HSI forces, Talon also had to contend with Morrison and Ana resurfacing. Morrison apparently engaged Reaper, but when asked about what happened, simply commented "old soldiers are hard to kill." Reaper apparently headed for Europe after the attack.[14]

Infiltration

Reaper-infiltration

Going in guns blazing

Reaper worked with Widowmaker and Sombra in a mission to assassinate Katya Volskaya, the CEO of Volskaya Industries,[37] on the orders of Vialli.[33] Sombra hacked the site's systems, allowing Reaper to bypass the factory's defenses and get within striking distance of the target, though it would be Widowmaker who would take the shot. The operation went awry when an alarm was sounded, and Widowmaker missed her shot in the commotion. Reaper ordered her to hold the perimeter while he entered the factory, guns blazing, killing numerous guards. He was confronted by a mech, which temporarily incapacitated him, and he ordered that Sombra take out the target. Reaper was able to reduce the mech to a pile of scrap, but Sombra reported that Katya had escaped. Furious, Reaper ordered that the agents return to the ship. He walked off, throwing away his shotguns in frustration.

In truth, Sombra had let Volskaya live, in an attempt to gain leverage over her due to her dealings with the omnics.[37] Reaper later developed suspicions about her actions with Volskaya, possibly learning the truth in its entirety.[33]

Reaper was able to gain access to a Helix Securities maximum security prison, using an aircraft that was able to penetrate the base's defenses, likely due to Talon moles within Helix. Away from the base, Doomfist and Reaper discussed recent Talon operations, such as the assassination of Mondatta, and the failed assassination of Volskaya. He discussed his list with Doomfist, and how Morrison and Ana were still on it. When asked if that was due to sentimentality on his part, Reaper denied it. He helped set Doomfist up with Maximilien in Monaco, where Vialli sent some of his men to assassinate Doomfist. The attempt failed, and Reaper, along with Doomfist, Widowmaker, and Sombra, headed for Venice. There, they killed Vialli's men, while Doomfist killed Vialli himself. Afterwards, Doomfist and Reaper met with Talon's inner council, where Doomfist declared his intention to start a war.[33]

A Great Day

Mission success, Akande. We achieved the objective.
Yeah, me and Smokey got the power relay data, just like you wanted. Well, most of it.
Most of it? What I wanted was a clandestine operation. Clean, surgical, and precise. You just destroyed a 300,000-tonne Null Sector carrier in broad daylight. I could see the explosion from space!
~ Reaper, Sombra, and Doomfist
ReaperMauga

Reaper isn't taking suggestions

After Null Sector's failed attack on Gothenburg, the command ship that had led the attack crashed in the sea while on its way back to base. Doomfist sent Reaper, Sombra, and Mauga to infiltrate the ship and retrieve power relay data for a device Talon was building. After entering the ship, the carrier's dormant Nulltroopers activated, forcing Reaper and Sombra to fight their way through them to a room where Sombra could perform her hack. Mauga asked if they were "taking suggestions," but Reaper ordered him to hold the perimeter. Mauga did no such thing however as he ran off, apparently pursuing his own agenda. An irate Reaper drew his shotgun on him, but was forced to deal with the attacking Nulltroopers instead as Sombra continued to hack the ship's systems.[1]

ReaperSombra-sinking

Reaper tells Sombra they have to leave

The ship began to sink, and Reaper told Sombra they were out of time. She refused to leave, stating that she wouldn't leave without the data. Reaper accepted, and used his wraith form to exfiltrate the ship and enter the dropship. He took off, with Mauga and Sombra getting onboard on time before the command ship sank into the ocean.[1]

ReaperSombra-executioner

Reaper offers to play executioner

Having completed the mission, an irate Doomfist contacted the team, demanding an explanation as to why a covert op had resulted in the complete destruction of the carrier. Sombra explained what had happened, pinning the blame on Mauga. Having heard her account, Doomfist ordered Sombra to execute Mauga, or meet the same fate. Reaper offered to be the executioner, but Sombra refused, and headed into the back of the ship to do the deed herself. However, Mauga escaped execution, as he revealed the reasons for his actions, and handed Sombra the ship's actual power relay.[1]

Trivia

Reaper-statue

The Reaper statue

  • A statue of Reaper was present at GamesCom 2015.[39]
  • Reaper's face mask's design is similar to the Blackwatch logo as well as his emblem, possibly to highlight that he was the leader of the group or they all symbolize an owl which represents death.
  • It is possible for Reaper to one hit kill every hero except Bastion and tanks.
  • Reaper's guns open up when fired on all of his skins and on his default sets have vents on the outside that say "🔺Caution" with the red arrow pointing to them as well as a glowing red switch that's always set to "OFF" as it says. Similarly his set of shotguns on his Soldier: 24 skin say "◀ Caution Moving Part" on them.
  • Reaper's guns have different words on them for each set of skins such as:
    • Default sets say "RPNT", "RPNT MK6", "MN 666-SHGX1", and "WTL-Type 8 Devil Chamber"
    • Blackwatch Reyes say "BLK001"
    • Plague Doctor and Nevermore say "CRW-ND"
    • Biker say "Speed Fang", "T4", and "REAPER"
    • Soldier: 24 say "RVGR" and "US ADVANCED MILITARY ARMS RESEARCH INSTITUTE ALLOY SUPERFOIL TYPE-24"
  • Reaper's Pumpkin skin is shown on the poster of The Reapening.
  • In some early concept art for the game, the name ''Gabriel King'' can be seen. There is a strong possibility that this could be Reaper's old name as Spanish surname ''Reyes'' translates to ''kings''.

Misc. Character Information

  • Reaper wears bandoliers of grenade shells.[40]
  • According to Reaper's dog tag on his Soldier: 24 skin, his blood type is AB Negative, his soldier ID number is 06 0000 0024, and he has no religion.
  • Reaper was a big basketball and football fan.[41] His favorite team was the L.A Lakers.[42]
  • Reaper is of Latino descent.[43]
  • His Mariachi skin might imply that he is of Mexican ancestry.
  • As Reaper, Reyes has apparently spent much of his time stalking Martina.[7]
  • Reaper dislikes Oasis.[7]

Disputed Information

  • Contradictory information exists as to the nature of Reaper and Morrison's relationship. An Atlas News post in 2015 stated that Morrison becoming head of Overwatch was the source of the rift between them.[9] In 2018, Jeff Kaplan stated that there was no rift, that Reyes was happy for Morrison to have the more political role and be "number two," as there would be less accountability.[13]
  • At some point after Null Sector's return, Reaper and his fellow Talon members engaged Overwatch in a firefight at Petra. Talon was forced to retreat.[44]

Cultural References

  • Reaper bears resemblance to the Grim Reaper, from various real-world cultures.
  • Reaper's reload animation is possibly a reference to the lobby shootout scene from The Matrix.
  • Reaper's legendary Cursed Captain skin is a possible nod to Disney's rendition of Davy Jones. The main Antagonist of the 2006 film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.
  • Reaper's voice line "I'm Back in Black" is a possible reference to Australian rock band AC/DC's hit song Back in Black.
  • Reaper's voice line "I'm not a psychopath. I'm a high functioning psychopath" paraphrases a quote by Sherlock Holmes from the first episode of the British mystery crime drama series Sherlock.
    • The original quote is "I'm not a psychopath, Anderson, I'm a high functioning sociopath. Do your research."
  • Death Blossom might be a reference to
    • a weapon used in the 1984 movie The Last Starfighter named Death Blossom.
    • Katarina from League of Legends, whose ultimate "Death Lotus" behaves similarly.
    • Strafe, an ability for the Demon Hunter class from Diablo III, another Blizzard title.
    • the art of Gun-kata from the movie Equilibrium.
    • a military term used to describe a group of men firing wildly in all directions surrounding the group.
  • The "CRW-ND" written on Plague Doctor and Nevermore skins' guns might be a reference to "crowning", a technique from the game Left 4 Dead that involves focusing the devastating fire of a shotgun in point blank range on the Witch, a very high health enemy, essentially killing her before she can react - this being a reference to Reaper's tank busting abilities.
    • It may be a play on the gaming term "owned", crossed with the skins' "crow" theme ("crow-ned", rather than "crown-ed").

In Other Blizzard Games

Merchandise

  • A Funko Pop Reaper figurine was released in June, 2016.[46]
  • A 12" Reaper statue was made available in 2017.[47]
  • A Figma Reaper statue became available in 2019.[48]

Development

ReaperTitan

The Reaper class from Project Titan

Reaperearlyart

Reaper early concept art

Prior to the development of Overwatch, Reaper was the name of one of the player classes in the cancelled Project Titan, which in the original pitch for the game that would become Overwatch was envisioned as wielding dual shotguns and a magnum, and using the abilities Death Blossom and Shadow Walk.[49] This class was reworked into the present day Reaper as one of the first three characters designed for Overwatch, alongside Tracer and Widowmaker.[50] The character of Reaper was inspired entirely by concept art for the game—his actual character was developed after his appearance was presented.[51] Originally, he only had a single shotgun.[52]

Under Overwatch's original leveling system, Reaper's wraith form would give him healing abilities once he reached a certain level.[53] Reaper once had a slimmer design with a mask that was more human looking and dual wielded SMGs.[40]

Overwatch2Reaper

Overwatch 2 Reaper early concept art

Along with most heroes, Reaper's appearance was redesigned for Overwatch 2. They spoke about integrating his armour, cloak and iconic cowl into his new look, while keeping the classic reaper silhouette. They experimented with his colour scheme in development, such as trying completely silver arms and more jacket layers. Ultimately, they replaced his "bone white" mask and other features with a more "deadly, edgy silver" to change his colour scheme. [54].

Overwatch 2 PvP
Patch
Description
Developer Comments: With the previous patch change to how armor reduces damage, shotgun weapon heroes like Reaper lost some value since much of their gameplan revolved around pressuring large tank heroes. To help shift Reaper toward being more effective against smaller targets we're tightening the weapon spread on the Hellfire Shotguns and reducing the amount of time enemies have to react to his Shadow Step teleport.

Ability-reaper1 Hellfire Shotguns

  • Weapon spread reduced from 6.5 to 6 degrees.

Ability-reaper3 Shadow Step

  • Cast time reduced from 1.5 to 1.2 seconds.

Ability-reaper4 Death Blossom

  • Damage per second increased from 170 to 185.
  • Ultimate cost decreased by 12%.
General updates

Most damage-dealing projectile sizes have been increased by a new global modifier added to their base size.

  • +0.05 meters for hitscan projectiles with a high rate of fire or spread (e.g., Tracer's Pulse Pistols or Reaper's Hellfire Shotguns).
  • +0.08 meters for hitscan projectiles that are more precise (e.g., Cassidy's Peacekeeper or Soldier:76's Heavy Pulse Rifle).
  • +0.05 meters for travel time projectiles that are shotguns or have a very high rate of fire (e.g., Roadhog's Scrap Gun or Ramattra's Void Accelerator).
  • +0.10 meters for travel time projectile with a speed greater than 50 meters per second (e.g., Zenyatta's Destruction Orb).
  • +0.15 meters for travel time projectile with a speed less than or equal to 50 meters per second (e.g., Pharah's Rocket Launcher).
  • Very large projectiles with a base size greater than 0.5 meters have been excluded from these increases (e.g., Orisa's Energy Javelin or Reinhardt's Fire Strike).

Hero combined HP (base health/armor/shields) increased by 15-25%.

  • 150-175 HP heroes increased by 25 HP.
  • 200-300 HP heroes increased by 50 HP.
  • 300+ HP (Tanks) increased by 75-100 HP.
  • Each hero's precise health increases are listed in their patch notes below.

Ultimate Charge

  • All Ultimate ability costs increased by 10%.

Regenerative Passive for All Heroes

  • All heroes now regenerate 20 health per second after 5 seconds of not taking damage.

Damage Role Passive

  • Reload speed bonus on elimination has been removed.
  • New role passive: Dealing damage reduces enemy healing received by 20% for 2 seconds.

Quick Melee

  • Damage increased from 30 to 40.
Hero updates
  • Health increased from 250 to 300.
Developer Comment: The Reaper and Moira changes are addressing an inconsistency with the interaction of Wraith Form or Fade with mobility-locking effects such as Junkrat's Steel Trap, Sigma's Gravitic Flux, Zarya's Graviton Surge, and Cassidy's Magnetic Grenade. They are now disabled similarly to Tracer's Recall or Sombra's Translocator, which are abilities that also phase out and can move the player.

Ability-reaper2 Wraith Form

  • Can no longer be activated while affected by mobility-locking effects (Magnetic Grenade, Steel Trap, Graviton Surge, etc.).

Ability-reaper4 Death Blossom

  • Ultimate cost reduced 8%

Ability-reaper1 Hellfire Shotguns

  • Spread reduced from 8 to 7 degrees
GENERAL
  • Phase effects no longer clear the Zarya Ability-zarya4 Graviton Surge or Sigma Abilities-sigma5 Gravitic Flux movement restriction effects
    • E.g., Reaper can still use Ability-reaper2 Wraith Form while in Graviton Surge to prevent damage but can’t walk out of it
  • Sombra Ability Sombra Hack Hack effect is now removed by phase effects
HERO

Ability-reaper1 Hellfire Shotguns

  • Damage per pellet reduced from 6 to 5.4
  • Spread increased from 6 to 8

Overwatch 1
Patch
Description
Ability-reaper5 The Reaping
  • Life Steal amount increased from 30% to 35%
Ability-reaper1 Hellfire Shotguns
  • Damage per projectile increased from 5.5 to 6

Developer Comment: The recent adjustment to Reaper's shotguns ended up being less beneficial than intended so we're increasing the damage per projectile slightly.

Ability-reaper1 Hellfire Shotguns
  • Spread reduced from 8 to 6
  • Damage per projectile reduced from 7 to 5.5

Developer Comment: Reaper's shotguns have a high damage potential but require close range or large targets to fully utilize. We're smoothing this out by extending the range at which he can consistently deal damage while lowering the maximum damage of each shot.

Ability-reaper5 The Reaping
  • Life Steal reduced from 40% to 30% of damage dealt
*Reverted edge-placement change for ground targeted abilities (Reaper's Shadowstep, Mei's Icewall, Symmetra's Teleporter, etc)
*Ground targeted abilities (Reaper’s Shadowstep, Mei’s Icewall, Symmetra’s Teleporter, etc) will now more heavily prefer edges over placing as far away as possible.
Ability-reaper3 Shadow Step
  • Can now be used in air
  • Time to exit Shadow Step reduced from 1.0 second to 0.5 of a second
  • Reaper is now invisible for the entire time it takes to exit shadow step
  • Railings and other breakable objects no longer block teleporting
  • Disabled by Zarya’s Graviton Surge and Junkrat’s Steel Trap

Developer Comments: Shadow Step was originally intended to be purely an out-of-combat mobility tool to traverse the map, since Wraith Form was already a great tool for disengaging. However, this made Shadow Step very situational, so we’re increasing its flexibility to make it a better, less niche ability. This will enable Reaper to use Shadow Step in more offensive situations.

Ability-reaper5 The Reaping
  • Life steal reduced from 50% to 40% of damage dealt
Ability-reaper5 The Reaping
  • Life steal increased from 30% to 50% of damage dealt

Developer Comments: Reaper’s passive enables him to play aggressively when near enemies. This change allows him to keep the pressure up while he’s dishing damage to his enemies. The added life steal is particularly effective against tanks, as they tend to do less damage than other heroes, and also take more damage from his Hellfire Shotguns due to their larger hit volumes.

Ability-reaper1 Hellfire Shotguns
  • Spread randomization reduced by 50%
  • Spread pattern adjusted

Ability-reaper5 The Reaping

  • Life steal increased from 20% to 30% of damage dealt
Ability-reaper4 Death Blossom
  • Reloads Hellfire Shotguns after use

Ability-reaper2 Wraith Form

  • Move speed bonus increased from 25% to 50%
  • You can now cancel the ability by pressing the Shift or Primary Fire hotkey
Ability-reaper3 Shadow Step

Sound effect and VO distance has been reduced by 50%

Ability-reaper5 The Reaping
  • Removed health orbs
  • Now regains 20% of all damage done to heroes as Health
Ability-reaper2 Wraith Form
  • Ammo is now entirely refilled when Wraith Form is used
