“ | Junkertown, welcome to the Reckoning! Reckoning! Reckoning! Reckoning! |
„ |
~ The announcer and the crowd |
The Reckoning is a form of combat used by the Junkers to determine their ruler. It is held in the Scrapyard.
Background[ | ]
“ | No Wastelander had ever made it to the Reckoning before. But here I am. A free-for-all with zero rules. And the survivor...gets the throne. King Howl has never lost. Not until today. | „ |
~ Odessa Stone |
The Reckoning is hosted every few seasons—a boisterous, week-long gathering full of feasting, fighting, and shows of strength. Anyone may publicly challenge the reigning Junker monarch provided they defeat all the other challengers first. It’s the main event of the Reckoning: challengers spend all year training, building ostentatious mechs and weaponry, and cultivating juicy rivalries.[1]
The Reckoning (or at least the challenge to the monarch) is a free-for-all. Once there, four combatants, including the reigning champion, take part in the fight. There are no rules, nor standardized equipment. The only way to survive the Reckoning is to win, or to be granted mercy by the winner. The Reckoning is open to those outside the Junkers.[2]
History[ | ]
It is not clear if Mason Howl became king via a Reckoning, but he had numerous Reckonings over his thirteen years of rule. His reign came to an end through Odessa Stone, who was the first Wastelander to make it to the Reckoning.[2] Becoming queen, Stone ruled for at least a decade. Few dared to challenge her, and none succeeded.[3]
Trivia[ | ]
The Reckoning appears to be inspired by the Thunderdome from Mad Max.
