Overwatch Wiki

Status effects are conditions that affect the target for a short period of time. These effects are inflicted usually by abilities, but can also be applied by weapons. Weapon and ability effects may also be a combination of multiple status effects.

Positive effects[]

Positive status effects are usually applied by allies or the hero themself.

Invincible[]

Invincible is a status effect that makes the target immune to damage. The attacks will still hit the target, but their damage is negated. Becoming invincible also removes and prevents slows and prevents (but doesn't remove) stuns and knockdowns. Invincible by default has no effect on other negative status effects.

Phased out[]

Phased out causes the hero to became impervious to damage and most negative effects. A hero that is phased out passes through other players and cannot be hit by enemy attacks. This is different from invincible in that instead of only "blocking" the damage, phased heroes cannot be hit in the first place, causing any projectiles to pass through them. The status will also remove most negative status effects and attached objects from the hero.

Negative effects[]

Negative status effects are harmful effects, usually applied by enemies or in some cases by the hero themself. Negative status effects that limit the hero's ability to move, shoot or use their abilities, are colloquially referred to as "crowd control" by players. Abilities that apply negative status effects can be credited for environmental kills, if they cause a player to fall of the map.

Slowed[]

Slowed is a negative status effect that reduces the target's movement speed. The strengths of slowing effects caused by enemies stack additionally with each other and movement speed buffs. Self-inflicted movement speed penalties, however do not stack with other slowing effects. Instead, the greatest slowing effect of the two will take effect. Some movement abilities are unaffected by slows.

Stunned[]

Stunned is a negative status effect that completely prevents the player from controlling their hero. Stunned heroes are unable to move, shoot, aim or use their abilities. Additionally, getting stunned will interrupt movement abilities and abilities that have a short cast animation or are channeled, usually negating the ability and putting it on full cooldown.

Frozen[]

Frozen is a unique stun-like effect caused by Mei's Blizzard or Endothermic Blaster's primary fire with Deep Freeze perks. It causes the exact same effect as stunned, except it can be removed by effects that make the target invincible, such as Projected Barrier.

Pinned[]

Pinned is a unique stun-like effect caused by Reinhardt's Charge. It causes the hit target to be stunned while stuck to Reinhardt as he is charging. Pinned effect once applied can be only removed by Lifeweaver's Life Grip and Sombra's Translocator.

Hooked[]

Hooked is a unique stun-like effect caused by Roadhog's Chain Hook. It causes the hit target to face Roadhog and be stunned while pulled to him. Hooked effect once applied can be only removed by Lifeweaver's Life Grip and Sombra's Translocator.

Knocked down[]

Knocked down has the same effect to the target hero as stunned, but it also causes the hero to fall and lie on ground face up. In the last 0.5 seconds of the duration, the target will enter a wake up animation where they start to stand up.

Asleep[]

Asleep has a similar effect to knocked down, except the target will instantly start the wake up animation when they take damage. The only ability that currently causes asleep is Ana's Sleep Dart.

Mobility lock[]

Mobility lock is a status that disables the hero's movement abilities. It prevents the affected player from activating movement abilities and immediately ends any active movement abilities. The affected hero can still aim, shoot, jump, crouch and use any non-movement abilities as normal and be moved by objects, such as Petal Platform or Teleporter. Movement speed buffs generally do not count as movement abilities, unless it the only effect provided by the ability. Mobility lock does not immediately end movement abilities that grant free flight, but will still prevent the flight for the duration.

Movement lock can only be removed by Lifeweaver's Life Grip and Orisa's Fortify. Mauga's Overrun also prevents the effect, but as it is also a movement ability, it cannot be used to remove it. Some movement locking abilities may be prevented by being phased out while about to be hit by it.

Rooted[]

Rooted effect applies mobility lock to the hero and also makes the target hero completely unable to move, including jumping, crouching or being affected by knockbacks. The target can still aim, shoot and use non-movement abilities while rooted.

Knockback[]

Knockback is an effect that causes an impulse that forcibly moves a hero. Knockback can be applied by various abilities and most explosive weapons to both the user and enemies. Additionally, the standard Quick Melee, available to most heroes, causes a very small knockback.

Knockup[]

Knockup is an effect similar to knockback, but it sends the target directly upwards and causes them to be unable to control their movement in the air.

Hacked[]

Hacked makes the hero unable to use their abilities. This includes all normal and ultimate abilities and certain passive abilities. Similarly to getting stunned, hacked will also interrupt movement abilities and abilities that have a short cast animation or are channeled, usually negating the ability and putting it on full cooldown. Hacked heroes can still use their weapon (both primary and secondary fire) and move normally.

The only abilities that currently cause hacked are Sombra's Hack and EMP.

Discord[]

Discord causes the player to have the " Orb of Discord from Zenyatta" alert. Player afflicted with it will take increased damage from all damage sources.

Damage over time[]

Damage over time effect causes the hero to periodically take a small amounts of damage without further interaction from the hero that applied the effect and regardless of the position of the target hero. As such, beam effects and abilities that create an area that deals periodic damage, such as Disruptor Shot, do not count as damage over time effects. Becoming phased out, cleansed by Kiriko's Protection Suzu, receiving Zarya's Particle Barrier or Projected Barrier, or collecting a health pack will remove any damage over time effects from the hero. Damage from damage over time effects ignores armor.

Anti-heal[]

Anti-heal prevents the target hero from receiving any healing. Healing projectiles will still collide with heroes affected by anti-heal, but any healing provided by them will be negated. Heroes affected by anti-heal also cannot pick up health packs.

Captive Sun mark[]

Captive Sun mark is an effect specific to Illari's Captive Sun. Each player having this effect is slowed for the duration of it and will explode after a few shots, becoming Sunstruck and taking high damage and also damaging all nearby allies. This effect is chained and will cause Sunstruck across multiple targets if more than one of them are in close range and affected with it and just one of them takes damage.
