Sudden Death round start screen in Competitive Play.
Sudden Death, in Overwatch, is a feature in Capture the Flag and a removed feature in Competitive Play. Sudden Death occurs at the end of the regular play time or Overtime if the score is tied.
Capture the Flag[]
In Capture the Flag, Sudden Death places both capture zones much closer to the center of the map and requiring only a single capture to determine victory.
Competitive Play[]
Sudden Death was removed from Competitive Play in Overwatch Competitive Season 2 on September 2, 2016 and was replaced with Time Bank rules. In Competitive Play, Sudden Death was be played as a single, abbreviated round: if the attackers were able to capture the objective, they won; otherwise, the defenders would win. On a standard attack-vs-defense map, a coin toss will determine which team is attacking. Prior to being phased out, Sudden Death would have the following requirements for the attacker side: [1]
- Capture the first point on Assault and Hybrid maps:
- Hanamura in 1 minute and 35 seconds.
- Temple of Anubis in 1 minute and 30 seconds.
- Volskaya Industries in 1 minute and 35 seconds.
- King's Row in 1 minute and 30 seconds.
- Numbani in 1 minute and 50 seconds.
- Hollywood in 1 minute and 45 seconds.
- Push to a checkpoint in Payload maps:
- The first checkpoint on Route 66 in 1 minute and 35 seconds.
- The first checkpoint on Dorado in 1 minute and 30 seconds.
- The second checkpoint on Watchpoint: Gibraltar in 1 minute and 35 seconds.
