Wellington was the site of one of the last battles of the Omnic Crisis. After Anubis was shut down, the city was assaulted by a force of submersible omnics. Wellington's locals mobilized to hold them back, but had taken heavy losses by the time the Overwatch strike team arrived. Their swift response was credited with saving thousands of lives, and - more importantly to some New Zealanders - preserving New Zealand's ecosystem.[1]
