We shouldn’t give the people of Kanezaka more reasons to be afraid. But that doesn’t mean we can’t frighten the Hashimoto. And I can’t think of anything more terrifying than a force that strikes from the shadows, a force with no face, one they can’t explain—
Like ghosts—Yōkai.
~ Kiriko Kamori and Ryōta

The Yōkai is a small, ragtag group of teenagers dedicated to fighting against the Hashimoto clan.[1][2] Coming from all walks of life, they are dedicated to protecting the people of Kanezaka.[3]

Background[]

The Yōkai was formed a bit over a year ago[4][5] in response to the tyranny enacted on the citizens of Kanezaka by the Hashimoto clan.[6]

The group would strike back at the clan in a variety of ways, including but not limited to: stealing shipments of their contraband, badly beating or robbing their men, spraying bright, conspicuous messages around Kanezaka,[4] breaking their windows, and robbing the Hashimoto's own bar, the Tora No Sumika.[6] However, the vigilantes would hide from the Hashimoto when they responded, leaving the ordinary people of Kanezaka to suffer the Hashimoto's retribution in their place.[4]

When Kiriko Kamori was 20, she joined the group herself to fight against the Hashimotos.[7] During one of the group's infiltrations to destroy a shipment of the Hashimoto's guns, they originally planned to blow it up. However, doing so would risk scaring and putting innocent citizens in harm's way. Kiriko believed this lack of regard would make the group no better than the Hashimotos. Instead, she believed they should strike from the shadows, become a force without a face, one that scares the Hashimotos and leaves them unable to explain what's happening. The others agreed, they had to strike like ghost, like Yōkai.[6]

With Kiriko's leadership, the Yōkai became more and more of a thorn in the Hashimoto's side. They ambushed Hashimoto businesses, disrupted supply lines, and constantly undermined them through strategic attacks. But no matter how hard the Hashimoto pressed, the Yōkai always managed to slip through their fingers.[8]

  • The yōkai are a group of spirits in Japanese folklore.
  • The members of the group all wear masks based on different yōkai: Kiriko wears a kitsune mask, while others wear masks based on a tanuki, amabie, kappa, kasa-obake, and oni, respectively.
  • During the Kanezaka Challenge event, players could earn a spray of the group's logo for Hanzo.
  • The exact formation of the Yōkai slightly differs between sources. According to Kiriko's hero page, the Yōkai were calling themselves as such from the outset. However, the Yōkai short story attributes the naming of the group to Kiriko, who joined the group after its formation.[8][6]
